Accessing Top of Nose for Waxing

Hi all,

Planning to clean and wax our 2018 Passport GT 2670 when it comes out of indoor storage in about a month.

Just curious how others handle the top of the nose to wax? I don't see from the roof as an option. I installed MaxxAir vents last fall and that was scary enough making sure I didn't go through the roof and only stepped on the roof joists or laid down and rolled around.

I don't see putting a ladder up against the nose to reach where it starts to swoop back near the top for similar concerns. Do you use a few pieces of scaffolding?

Just curious how everyone reaches that part safely. I have to get some pine gum off of it as well...

Tnx
-Steve

I have a 5th wheel. I lower front jacks as much a possibly can and use a short step ladder and then wash with a car washing brush with car wash containing carnauba wax

Washing and Waxing front of RV

What's worked well for my fifthwheel, is to back my truck up close to the RV and stand on the tailgate, and if to get higher spots put a 2x8 across the sides for the bed.

I guess it helps I'm 6'1"?

I've had success using a windshield cleaner pad attached to an extension pole to apply wax and then used a different cloth on it to buff out the wax. It's high enough that you don't need to be too fussy with getting it perfect.

Just washed and put 2 coats on the 2670. I use a 12 foot step ladder straddle the A frame and am able to get to it , then angle the ladder at the corners. For the 303 on the roof and vent cover. I place a piece of insulation board cut long ways and double it so it is 2 feet long and I make it about 6 feet long and I kind of just set on it for the middle part. the tall step ladder I can usually get appx 30 inches down the sides and across the back. I have beams under the shed that I pull upon and hold on to. When using a tall ladder I try to have 3 points of contact when moving. The nose cap is the hardest part because of the sweep.

Placing a plank across the bed of the pick-up was how I used to access the top of the nose on our 5er. Being a little older and not getting along well with ladders do to arthritic knees and a fake hip, I looked for a safer alternative.

Went to Harbor Freight and bought a roll around Metal Tech scaffold for under $200. Way more stable than a ladder. With the adjustable height feature, I can reach anywhere on the sides/rear cap/front cap. Great for waxing/polishing/applying 303. The scaffold is 6 ft long so it takes fewer "moves" to get the job done.

BTW, just noticed in the Tractor Supply ads that they are selling a similar scaffold for $130.

Thanks folks. I have a Little Giant convertible ladder that I setup in "A" formation to try to get to the top of the front but felt like I was putting too much lateral pressure on the ladder for my comfort.

The portable scaffold is neat. I don't have Harbor Freight up here, but looks like Canadian Tire has them. Just not sure where I'd store it when it wasn't in use tho...

Thanks for the info.

Like others, I drop the front of my TT. I then use an extension ladder fitted with foam pads made from large diameter swim noddles resting against the front of the TT.

Word of caution, tie a rope to the bottom rung of the ladder and the TT front axle. Wet concrete and an angled ladder are not a stable combination. I had a close call before I started doing it safely tying off with the rope.

You can try Princess Auto if it's close by. Looks to be a bit cheaper.

Just got the crappy tire flyer preview for Friday and they have their scaffolding coming on sale.

Might pick one up as I have a bunch of work to do on the front of mine to fix a minor delam issue.

How about using Drywall Stilts? They come in various heights so there must be a pair tall enough for just about any trailer.

I dunno... for me personally, that sounds like a one way ticket to the emergency room...

I have a Passport 2520RL. I use a step ladder and what my wife refers to as my long monkey arms. I did go on the roof a couple of time to install something by laying on a soft sided surfboard. I have heard others just use a sheet of plywood but I was worried about scuffing the rubber roof.

I try to wax mine a couple times per year which keeps it looking new. I'm fortunate to have a storage space that is shaded by a big class A.

Tractor Supply is showing a 6ft tall scaffold for $169. What appears to be the same scaffold at Harbor Freight is $209.

A number of years ago I picked up the 6ft multipurpose scaffold and have used it around the property ever since. I consider it one of my better investments. Yes I use it to wax the RV including the cap. One word of caution, Don't Forget to LOCK the casters. It comes apart in 3 pieces for easy storage or you can do Like I do and let it collect junk and park the lawn mower under it.

I decided to buy the scaffold at Tractor Supply. I went there expecting it to be $169.99 like their online sale stated.
It was $139.99. On sale from April 17-22.
Call your local store before you go. My store 4 blocks away didn't have it in stock. Had to drive 30 minutes to another store.

Crappy Tire doesn't seem to be stocking these anymore. I've got a raincheck in my wallet that I don't think will be worth much.

So looking at Princess, they have a couple of cheaper ones now that were not there before.

Might buy this one. A bit smaller but should work.
