Summer Tour with the Kids-How to get there?
Hi all. We have a Raptor 398 TH. It’s s little over 40’. I want to take the kids (9&6) on a little trip in July. We live in Portland area, thinking of heading south to CA and go to Yosemite, then east and eventually end up at RedRocks, CO for a concert. Then maybe go to Yellowstone and possibly Glacier but I think the TH May be too long for the Going To The Sun Highway. We probably won’t take any toys on this trip as I only have a week. Looking for pointers on where to stay, issues/experience, ideas on how to do this. We’ve had the TH since April but all I’ve done is take it hunting here in Oregon. The summer trip would definitely be the first big exercise.

A 9 and 6 year old are not going to be "happy and content" sitting for hours upon hours in the back seat of a tow vehicle for a "week long trip"...
You'd probably find them happier and having more fun if you just head south to Yosemite, spend 2 or 3 days "exploring and conquering", then head to an amusement park and let them "run wild".... Take lots of photos, they'll all be smiles and good memories... On the other hand, if you do try to make a round robin trip from Portland/Yosemite/Red Rocks/Yellowstone/Glacier/Portland, the travel time (per google maps) is 58 hours. Doing that trip in one week is the same as expecting your two kids to work 18 hours overtime at a full time job..... It won't be fun for them. YMMV

John hit this one out of the park. Less miles with more time will equal lots of smiles. Besides the drive time kn that trip, you'll have lots of set up and tear down too.

Tommy, what John and Chip said is 100% true. And to add just a little, 6 and 9 year old children have no interest in Going to the Sun Highway, nor much else at Glacier National Park. Your plan is entirely way too ambitious. But your thoughts are to be appreciated. Stick to the plans closer to home as suggested. AND SEND US PICTURES!

All of the replies above are spot on. The first year I retired we did a 5 week fall Western States loop, the second year we did a 7 week fall loop and made as far east as Mount Rushmore.
One week just does not cut it for multiple states!
Why not ask the kids what they would like to do for a week? Their answer might be quite different than what you are thinking about.

You'd be hard pressed to find a site big enough for your TH in either Glacier or Yellowstone NP. Plan on camping outside the parks at commercial rv parks with a rig that size.
Going to the sun road is length limited. Nothing over 21 ft combined length.
As others have said, one week is going to be tough. One thought, if you like scenery and wildlife, is to go to Teton NP near Jackson, WY. Stay in the Gros Ventre Campground in the park. They can handle rigs of your size and the area around there is full of beautiful scenery and wildlife. From there it's a 1/2 day drive to West Yellowstone, Montana and several commercial RV parks just outside the park. I'd recommend taking the loop from Madison Junction to Norris, Canyon Village, Fishing Bridge, and back through the Geyser Basin (Old Faithful) and back West Yellowstone. Great scenery, lots of places to stop and sitesee and again lots of wildlife.
You'll want to make reservations in West Yellowstone early. Gros Ventre does not take reservations but rarely fills up.
Hope this helps

Yeah, when I was 8 (almost 9) and my sister was 6, we took a long family trip from Texas, up to Mt Rushmore, over to the badlands, down through Jackson Hole, down to Pike's Peak, down through New Mexico and back to Texas, towing our 19' Terry. Like 5,000 miles. That trip last almost 5 weeks. (For comparison).
