Miles

Generally, how many miles do you drive before setting up camp while traveling?

When we're not on any kind of a schedule or deadline, we like to keep to about 250 miles per day. When we're on the clock, we aim to pull into an overnight campground at least two hours before sunset, because we've sworn off setting up in the dark if at all possible.

2x2x2, travel 200 miles, stop by 2pm, stay 2 days, but we are/were fulltimers.
If there were no places available to park, never used Wal-Mart, rest areas or truck stops & never will, we might have to drive further, but 300 was about our max, we had no place particular to be & no rush to get there.

I like to stick to the 300-400 miles also, closer to the 300 makes me a happy camper that night for setting up. We do stretch it out when headed out west. The first night we stop in Glendive, MT, which is about 600 miles from home, but stay at a hotel there because at that point, I don’t feel like setting up the camper. And the last day headed home is typically a long one, but we can literally park the truck and camper and fall into our own beds. Otherwise, shorter days are awesome!

Like to keep it to around 300 but on our trips east to visit family we split into 3 legs with the longest being close to 500. On travel mornings we get up at 4:30 AM, pull out by 5:30 so we get to the next stop in time to relax a little and walk the dogs. Also do not unhitch on the one night stands.

For me 7 hrs. is about as long as I want to go. On any trip set up before dark is mandatory. Enough time to "shut down" and get comfortable is also mandatory. I have always studied the area so know what is there and where I want to go eat, sites etc. I like about 5 hrs the best, and where I try to stay, and sometimes go no longer than 2-2 1/2 hours....but we are retired.

I spent my life "flying" from A to B due to some reason. Never even saw what was there when I, or the family, flew through it. I now have the ability to spend as much time, in as many places, as I want to. I'm trying very hard to learn to "slow down" and enjoy. I would encourage, strongly, those that travel either with limited, or unlimited, time to just take time to SEE and enjoy what they are going through -you may never get to see it again.

Since my wife also drags our 37 foot Alpine we have done 700 when leaving MN later than usual and wanted to keep going until WARM. Typically 300-400.

My wife never drives just my truck much less TV & TT.
I don't really like pulling more than 4 hours a day.
However, we do around 3 or 4 long road trips a year with only a vague destination in mind so some days it's as short as 1 1/2 hours because we found something interesting and some days it's more because we didn't.
I don't want to set up in the dark and I don't like towing in the dark either. We are trying to have fun.

I don't mind driving 10 hrs to spend the night at a Walmart so I can get to the site early and make the most of it well rested. I find when I drive that long I hibernate over night instead of sleep.

We have traveled as little as 100 miles and as much as 400, but we try to keep it under 300. I figure we average about 40-45 mph during the day (includes rest stops, pit stops and meals - usually in the TT, but not sightseeing along the way). Both of us drive.

I won't go into some of the "stoopid" things we did in our youth, but in the past 10 years, our longest day was in 2012 when we towed from northern Michigan to "near Effingham" to escape the snow/ice. We had a narrow window of clear, good weather and didn't stop until we were "out of the snow and freezing temperatures". That was about 14 hours and 600 miles in one leg of the trip/, some on ice/snow/slush covered roads.

Our shortest day was in 2014, we left a campground just east of Galesburg, IL and when crossing the railroad tracks in town, I saw a sign for the railroad museum and my DW saw a sign for the Carl Sandburg Museum. We turned around, went back to the campground and parked for another 2 days. Total distance travelled, about 20 miles, total miles toward our destination, 0 miles.

We consider the journey as a part of the trip's enjoyment, so if we see something that we'd like to stop and visit, we stop and visit. No longer do we travel "heads down, full speed ahead" but rather we make the driving a part of where we're headed.... Our attitude has changed from "We've got to get there by XXX" to "We'll get there when we get there"...

Interesting post. We just planned our trip from AZ to the UP and we are looking to do it in five days -- legs of 487, 437, 434, 386 and 315. Since I used to drive a semi and go for 400-500 miles a day, I'm hoping that won't be too bad, but after reading that the majority of folks seems to only go about 300 a day, now I'm starting to wonder...

We were invited to our "kids" friends wedding, in Ouray CO and had originally planned on leaving early on a Wednesday morning, for the Saturday wedding.

The DW is a tax professional and it was corporate tax season, which was supposed to end the day of the wedding.

She ended up working until 1:00 AM Thursday, to get everything wrapped up and we hit the road at 2:00 AM.

We took our new, 8 week old puppy with us so had plenty of opportunities for breaks along the way, stopped for a nice breakfast in Amarillo and made it to Bloomfield NM by 5:00 PM Thursday (811 miles according to google).

We found a very nice, family owned campground (Moore's) and checked in for the night... highly recommended, cooked a nice meal and were in bed by 9:00.

That was our furthest single drive, pulling the camper and I am not sure I would do it again.

Can't really measure miles in Alaska. Most of the highways are 2 lane There are sites we go to 20 miles away and 400 miles away, road travel is measured in hours. I really don't like any thing over 6 hours but up here it might take 6 hours or more to go 200 miles. We travel with dogs so it is up to them when they want to make a pit stop and it may not necessarily when we make ours. The nice thing about Alaska in the summer is that you don't really have to worry about it getting dark until August

With the RV we do 250 miles a day max. DW can't "back seat" drive any farther.
30 some years ago I once drove my '68 Mustang show car 2 - 16 hours days back to back to get to a show. Now I can't even stay awake for 16 hrs.

Second that. We do maximum 300 miles in a day and prefer shorter when possible. The idea of towing our trailer through an unknown CG in the dark where we could snag overhead branches or hit trees going around tight corners, is not a happy thought, so we insist on parking up before dark.
We generally hit the road around 9ish and like to be set up at our new destination around 3pm. We make coffee and lunch stops along the way and generally take it easy on ourselves. That way, getting there is as much fun as being there.

I suppose there's two schools of thought:

The vacation begins when you get there.
The vacation begins when you leave home.

Depending on which you choose, the travel is/is not a part of the overall experience. For many years when I was in the Air Force, we had a "destination centered focus". We'd pass by things we wanted to see, but didn't have time to stop and enjoy them. Many we made mental notes to "go back someday and check them out"... We're now at the stage of our life where we're doing just that. One mistake we won't make "this time around" is to make those mental notes of things we wanted to see but don't have time... For us, there may not be another opportunity, so if we see "the world's biggest ball of string" or "Free apple pie with every meal" or "the worlds best tossed rolls", well, now is the time to find out.....
