Serious damage on new RV

I can tell this story now without the language being unacceptable and no tears on the keyboard. Brenda and I spent two night in Florida visiting friends. Backed up to leave in the morning, pulled forward to check connections, brakes, etc. Backed up again and heard a loud crash. That was AC cover number one hitting the pavement. AC cover number two was still on the roof. The cause of the problem was a low hanging steel cable from a cable company that had not been raised when repaired after the hurricane. Apparently hanging about 12 1/2 feet or slightly less.
End result? Ripped both AC/heat exchanger units out of the roof, tore the roof and ripped out the WIFI antenna, and scratched the paint high on the front. Camping World has been handling this like a champ. So has my insurance and I believe the cable company will take the brunt of it before it is over.
Damage at this point is a complete new roof, two new AC's and we go from there. Just waiting on parts for now. I and CW estimator figure a week at the beginning of January......$16,000 so far.
And yes, it was our first real trip with the new Mobile Suites.

Dammit Jim, that's horrible news....so sorry to hear that. I would think that the cable company would cover most, if not all the expense of getting it repaired. Good luck and keep us posted.

I don't think I could have written that without "sentence enhancers" and 4 letter adjectives. Cable company should be liable for all, and make you whole again. Good luck, keep us posted, as xrated said.

Wow! Jim I am so sorry to see that. Did it happen in Tallahassee? If so, you should have called and we could have helped out.

If my memory is correct, I believe the cable company is required to have 15' of clearance over an area like that. If it was 12' 6" or so they are in violation. You need to get with them. They will have to do an investigation. You will need something to document the height of the trailer. Any pics you have of it (prior to the roof damage) or the site etc. might come in handy. They will be slow but something like that should be able to be handled at the local level. Just get hold of them asap and be talking to their senior management. I've found that here in FL the service providers are less than expedient....or cooperative; in my case CenturyLink.

First trip; new trailer - yep, I'd be climbing the walls spouting tears myself! Good luck getting it repaired and PM me if there is anything at all we can do.

Jim,

I don't think I could be as "stoic" as you are, given the damage on your roof. My vocabulary would be comprised of exclusively "4 letter words" and my actions would definitely be "steamy".....

Sorry for the damage, hopefully the cable company will accept responsibility for their "cable caused damage" and there won't be any of the "exclusions related to temporary repairs".... Keep us posted on how things progress and if there's anything we can do from a distance, just let us know....

Good Luck !!!

Sorry!

Your being more civil than I could be! If Cable Company doesn't own up for 100% (plus inconvenience fee), get a GOOD local lawyer. I had a similar situation about 30 years ago when they were placing cable across the road without a flagger. They made a h*ll of a mess when they tangled up my front bumper, ETC! Don't compromise...

Good Luck,

Man, that's a tough pill to swallow! Especially considering this being the "Maiden" voyage.
Back when I was climbing poles and hanging wire the lowest minimum height per code was 15.5'. So you're probably right that the cable company will be eating their share of this. Hope all the repairs work out for the better!
Best of luck to you

Brenda and I tied the loose AC unit to the top (no small ordeal, there are no tie-downs on the roof) and towed it to CW at 9 the next morning, CW pulled it in the back, removed both units, cut patches of roofing material and patched and sealed the roof openings. We pulled the unit back to Clewiston RV Park and that is where we are living right now. NO AC is not very handy, but it has been cool anyway.
Don't think for a minute that I didn't let my emotions loose with those in the park for a short period of time. My mother and your mothers probably don't use the language the locals heard for a period of time. But any outrage shown against the sub-management in the RV park would only have succeeded in turning them against my cause. These are mostly ladies who either are work-campers or part-time help working for off-site owners.
By now y'all know me well enough to know that I will keep you posted with the outcome. CW has done exactly was they've claimed so far. We will see how the cable company responds.

Jim: sorry your going through this situation. I'm sure your initial reaction was justified and I'm glad to hear you stepped back and thought it out, not to take it out on the campground employees. I join all the other members of this forum in hoping for a good resolution for you and Brenda. Hang in there! I will take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to both of you. Keep us posted on your progress. Sincerely, Jim

What's that saying? - "This too will pass" - sorry to hear of your misfortune.
I have to agree with all of the above - the cable company has to own this.
Good luck going forward.

Dam' but that sucks!!!
So far only the TV antenna and a vent cover on our last 5er have met their end via a cable company error in height.

(Hopefully the cable company was not Spectrum/Time Warner)

Oh this is where you find overhead wre heights: Application Guide for 2012 NESC Table 232-1 - Connexus Energy

... and it should be 15.5 feet (unless weasel worded out locally

First - sorry this happened. I spend a lot of time looking "up" when driving these big 5th wheels I which there was some sort of "oh crap" detector...

If I was going to pay out of pocket (or via insurance) for a new roof, I'd be looking at alternatives, such as some of the synthetic or composite liquid coverings.. Retail on a 35+ roof is generally $9k plus and simply put - I think there are better solutions with better warranties that don't require constant sealing / maintenance.

On a Keystone, in particular, you're going to have that OSB roof. This REALLY needs to be replaced if you're going to re-cover it. Parts of it are going to come up with the old roof. Choose marine ply, if you can get them to do it...

And the AC units: Replacing these is dead simple (assuming the controls are not damaged, which are in the roof space in the RV) - the hardest part is lifting the 100 lb units on to the roof. CW is probably going to charge $1300 or so for new ones and you can order them (depending on model) in the $550-$800 range. All that remains is getting them up to the roof. They're really held on by 4 bolts and associated wires.... Seriously, I can replace one in 10 minutes (minus getting it up on the roof).

If those are the Mach 3 units - drill out the drains before installing them.. :-)

dcg, thanks for the advice. Everything will go back as original.....roofing, AC/heat pumps, etc. Geico has been excellent as usual. The claim money is in the bank. But this isn't over. The cable company is going to have their insurance cover this and Geico will get their money back. It hasn't happened yet but it will ......

You do it any way that's right for you guys. Glad the cable co is stepping up - eventually that should return your deductible.

If CW is doing the work - have them explain IN ADVANCE how they are going to repair that roof and make sure they guarantee the roof (not just the roof material).

I'm glad for you that it's getting fixed. But, I have one question. How did you get it under the cable without it hitting?
