P-1249?

Recently took our first long trip in our 5th wheel 26' Cougar. Have a 2000, 7.3 with 70,000 miles total stock although the previous owner had a 40hp chip which I removed. Once on the way and back, engine light appeared. Was off next day when I started. Had code read when returned, p-1249. There was no noticeable change in performance. What do you think?

Check out this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...it-affect.html

The problem code, P1249 is Wastegate Control Valve Performance issues.

It could be that your 20 year old turbo wastegate is sticking, needs cleaning, etc or it could be a PCM issue with the Map Sensor not sending the proper signal or with the PCM not responding to the inputs.

If there's no appreciable change in engine performance, no "fuel delivery compensation" from the PCM, I'd suspect it's not a critical failure, rather something that's dirty, carboned up, sticking or "just old"....

A good diesel shop can probably pinpoint the exact issue and tell you whether it needs repair or if you can ignore it/chip the truck to change the parameters or whether you need to fix/get it fixed.....

A 2000 with 70k. Maybe it sits too much. My 2016 6.7 has well over 90k.

On our Chevy a couple years ago, had a problem with our turbo, sticking waste gate, and the entire unit had to be replaced. Chevy and Ford, with their V8 diesels, have the turbo between the engine and firewall, so very difficult to get to. This is what ours looked like the day I went in to check on progress of repair. Mechanic is just about to remove the old turbo, new one is on the bench. We were at a little over 160K on the engine when this happened. We are at about 220K now. Fords need the cab removed to access their turbo also.
