Fummins Ford

Guy next to me had the cummins swap in his Ford….pretty cool..said he bought the motor from an old bread truck for $2000…has the dodge transmission also

He had the 6.0 and issues with it and didn’t want to go for the bulletproof fix as he had other issues as well…truck sat for 2 years until he decided to swap

Now if he only could get an Allison transmission to fit he would have the unicorn truck lol. The trifecta

Can't stand diesels but I admire the swap work. For sure if the Allison got stuck in there too it'd be a hauler.

People seem to be pretty happy with the 6.0s once they get all the fixes in.

Apparently it depends on the particular 6.0!
My son had it in an Excursion that was still a POS after bullet proofing several times & wouldn't run the day he told the bank to come pick it up & bring a trailer to haul it on. That was the biggest piece of crap they ever hung between frame rails or at least the one he had.
He bought a Ram 3500 4x4 Cummins with 220k miles on it & was by far a better vehicle than the Excursion with 150k less miles on it. He drove the Ram to just over 300k before some drunk ran him off the road totalling it, fortunately no one was hurt but the truck.

I’m swapping out the turbo on a 2005 for a customer. I would drive one if I could get the truck cheap enough and do all the “fixes” myself.

My Godson had a F250 with the 6.0 diesel. Had it bulletproofed by a garage that specializes in doing that work. He drove that truck for about another 150K towing an enclosed car trailer all over the country. He only sold it because he went to a 3/4 dually when he bought a fiver.

I think a lot of the "bulletproofing" reports are who does the work and the quality of parts used. All the IH Navistar engines Ford used had issues and the 6.0 was the first iteration with all the emissions added on. That's typically not a good experience (remember when GM tried to make a diesel out of a 350 gas engine?).

Ford sorta straightened it out by the time they got to the 6.4 but only if the owner was religious about the maintenance. Let the antifreeze go for years, or not complete regens, etc. and you will have trouble. Of course adding a tuner and deleting the DPF etc would turn it into a whole new engine.

So, it it's an old diesel does that mean no DEF?
That would be a savings.

LOL. the older 7.3L diesel Ford are worth big bucks. Ditto on the fixes, best to use premium parts and be religious about changing the oil on the 6.0s.

Our new 7.3L gas does plenty well and was way cheaper by about 12K$

The option price for the Ford 7.3l engine in a F350 is $1705.00
Cost for the 6.7 Diesel engine in a F350 is $10,495.00.

The difference is closer to $8790 than it is to $12,000

Yep. Even in my "older technology" 2015 diesel, I use a 2.5 gallon container of DEF every 4000 miles... That's a "whopping $1.9875 per thousand miles"...

DEF is def chump change in the grand scheme of $3.50/gallon fuel, $200 each for tires, and the "buy in cost" that pushes $80K for a "King Ranch option package"....

To put it in a "comparative perspective" I spend more on windshield washer fluid than I do on DEF......

DEF cost? Pffft. An $11, 2/12 gallon jug of DEF lasts me 3-4K miles of mixed use (towing and not) on my truck.

True on the order sheet. Not so much on the lot. All the dealers here add 4x4 to every diesel they order. So the "cheap" 2020s were about 68K, most 75K up. We had to special order and when our truck came in, it was the only one configured in the US at that time (Fed 20).

3/4 ton dually? I don’t believe any of the big three make a DRW in 3/4 ton.

A friend with a new diesel truck complains that it uses a lot more DEF than his old truck so I assumed it was costly.

There are a bunch of youtube videos on Gilder trucks so I assumed.....

There are a couple of companies that offer DRW kits for 3/4 tons. I looked once, but for the cost, better applied to a newer 350/3500 DRW.

Most of the Fummins conversations use the all mechanical 5.9. It would be great to see someone make one that would work with a 3 gen with common rail and 24 valves.

Back in the late 1970's a freind of mine did a conversion on his Ford 3/4 ton by makeing it a dually. That truck was a unicorn to begin with. It had a big block, 4 speed manual (first gear was a "granny gear" and don’t recall tire size but do remember they were split rims. Can't recall if he bought it new or used or if it was altered previously.
