Maxxair Vent Cover - Lost Screws

I installed my Maxxair vent cover 18 months ago according to the instructions supplied with it. I drilled holes in the vent frame and used the 8 sheet metal screws that came with the cover. Yesterday, I went up on the roof to clean it, and noticed that the cover was loose. Closer examination revealed that all 4 mounting screws on one side were missing, and the 4 on the other side were loose. I assume that the screws vibrated out sometime during the 5000+ miles we RV’ed this year. I expect the cover would have come off and been lost soon if I had not noticed the situation.

I replaced all 8 sheet metal screws with bolts, nuts, washers, and lock washers.

Use lock tite (blue) on the bolts. you will still be able to remove them for any work you might need to do but you won't have any surprizes like you just had

Belt & Suspenders?

SAABDOCTOR,

Sometimes I choose both a "belt and suspenders", but in this case I think the lock washers will be sufficient without adding Locktite. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

I believe my Maxxair Vent came with bolts not screws. Damn I just installed it in Jan and can't remember. Guess I'll have to check mine also.

Mine came with machine screws, lock washers and nuts. When I went to replace the brackets with the opening ones the originals were loose. I replaced the nuts with elastic stop-nuts and they have remained tight. It is nice to be able to open the cover to clean the vent and inspect the caulking. If I were you I would use the Locktite or stop nuts to play it safe. JM2˘, Hank
