Montana 3721RL Weight

My wife wants a Montana 3721RL but I think its little heavy for my truck

Truck Specs
F350 1 ton Diesel SRW
143.5” wheelbase
Payload off Yellow Sticker 3744
Axles 7,000
Max Tow Capacity 15,900

Montana 3721FL
Shipping Weight 12885
CC 3955
Dry Hitch 2840
Length 39’7”

We have owned three fifth wheels and we normally add 1500 lbs over shipping weight/UVW so loaded would be about 14385 lbs

Dry pin percentage 22% so at 14385 I would have a pin weight of 3165. I expect some creep on that percentage so if goes up 2% that would 24% pin would weigh 3740. When I subtract my wife and me plus the B&W hitch I see no way to stay under my GVWR and could easily exceed axle ratings.

Anyone have scale weights for 3721RL or the 3720RL?

Just to much weight or have I missed something?

The pin weight on that rig is 2840, factory spec's. Any way you add it up you are close on your max cargo capacity on the pickup. I don't see a problem on the towing weight, just possibly the weight in the bed of your truck. Oh happy day! On to the Ford dealer for a year-end bargain and back to the RV dealer to keep Momma happy! How can you go wrong?

I have found that a typical pin weight of 5ers this size after loaded seems to be in the area of 500 over dry ship weight. That will put your pin weight around 3300. After you add you, your wife, hitch, and fuel you will definitely be over your TV capacity by a couple hundred pounds. Many people would still probably do it. My opinion is that your tires are a bigger concern than the cargo capacity. When we first bought our Alpine (similar weights to the Montana), I towed it with a 2500. Yes it was overloaded, but it was the sidewall flex and wash out effect of the tires that made it feel unstable. When I went to the dually, it was night and day difference in stability. I know others tow similar RVs with a 3500 SRW, but you would be much happier/safer with a DRW.

Updating the truck isn't option since we have a HOA that they suggest that you don't park in the driveway and no one does and even a Crew Cab won't fit in the garage. I have to fit the 5er to the truck. I just thought my numbers might be off.

I tow heavy now with GVW 11,380 or my trucks 11,500 GVWR and less than 500 lbs below axle ratings and my fear with the 5er is I will exceed my axle ratings. I think we will better off going to a shorter 5er in the 35 foot range better suited from my truck.

Thanks

A active member of the forum, gearhead, recently traded in his F350 for a RAM 3500 SRW because of "knocking on the door" of his payload. He tows a Montana HC 305RL with an empty pin weight of 2270. With (per his statement) "his DW's 28 pair of shoes" and the washer/dryer in the front closet, he was concerned. It looks like the floorplan for the 3721RL you're considering has the washer/dryer a bit further back from the pin, but also has an empty pin weight of 2840.

Possibly you could PM gearhead and get some of his "real world experience" with his F350 SRW and reasons for his decisions.

My logic was quite convoluted, as usual. I was tired of driving the Vette for 1 hour and cleaning on it for 2 hours. Ready to sell it after 3 years, teen dream was completed. Add that my F350 SRW had a payload of 3267#. I was over that 200-400 pounds. The 305RL was advertised at 2175. With the optional front A/C and all ready to go we were heavy. When we travel we travel long and heavy, not too many 3-4 day trips, usually 3-4 weeks. So....I looked at Ram trucks and they had quite a bit more payload. I'm running 4018#. Basically the same truck as the Ford. I didn't want to invest the money in a new truck and let it sit outside in the driveway. I sold the Vette to a 25 yr. old single guy rolling in oilfield money, like I was. Was.
So the Ram is sitting all pretty in the garage. It tows fine. I am happy.

I can't find a Ram or Chevy that will fit in my garage, the only one that would fit is the Ford SuperCab 232.4" length. My yellow tag is 3744 so I would gain some with the RAM but not enough to justify trading.

I gave my wife what we need to do to buy the 5er she wants. Buy the 5er - Buy a new Truck and Buy new house with bigger garage.

There you go, problem solved!
Heck I've owned homes for 40 years, kept only one long enough to paint it. If my neighbors hadn't finally mowed their yard yesterday I was about ready to call a real estate agent.
Montana High Country is a bit lighter, all that "Helium Technology" and everything. I haven't looked lately but there may be a similar floorplan in that line that will work for you.
