To keep mine looking new is it as simple as rinse well first, and maybe avoid harsh glass cleaners since its plastic not glass?

OK, better understanding of your question.
I'd say if you really want to keep the existing mirror in good shape, you'd want to put a protective coating or something over the mirror so that it does not scratch.
Some of my RV friends have had good luck using a product called "helicopter tape" which is a tough material that will stand up to abuse and not yellow in the sunlights. In particular, on TT's they used it to cover the logo on the front window rock guard which takes a heck of a beating from sunlight and road stuff.
Here's a link to one manufacturer's product which they market as Racers Tape:

(Usual disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the company, but I do know several folks who have used this product with great success for a variety of purposes.)
