weight scales

Just wondering if rv's need to stop at DOT weight scales on the highways in Canada or US.

They do not have to stop at weigh scales in BC and I don't think they are required to stop in Alberta or Sask either. Not sure about elsewhere in Canada but anywhere we have travelled in the U.S. it hasn't been a requirement either. In fact, when the scales are busy, I really don't think they want RV's near the scales!

I agree with Festus. You are not required to stop. I live in Manitoba and we are not required to stop.

I just travelled south for the winter and passed through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. I was not required to stop at any scales and most states scales had a sign RV's exempt.

just watch the minor highways that set up mobile DOT area's. if the truck looks unsafe IE. to much hitch weight, they will pull you in and put you thru the ginder. our company just recived a 1300 dollar fine for being 82 lbs over on a rental trailer. the truck was a standerd 3/4 ton with out DOT numbers and the guy just thought that it looked funny. well i guess he was right. just goes to show that you can't go by what the rental place is telling you. do your own reserch.

It states for the State of South Dakota that: Weigh-Station Requirements: All towed vehicles, motor trucks or trailers over 8,000 lbs must stop.

The list contains contact numbers to support contents.

Actually, I passed through South Dakota last Saturday as I was heading south. The highway sign before weigh scale said RV's exempt. Just FYI, I should have corrected that and will if I can, otherwise staff will have to update it.

That's easier by the day for me, ha! When driving down from Alaska to Texas in my motor home, I got "confused" by a sign and went into a truck weigh/toll area, the guy was a jerk, telling me it wasn't meant for privately owned RV's only for hire RV's...whatever that is. Maybe someone transporting for hire or something.

we had a rep from the PA state police come in and "educate" us on the "new and up coming" DOT reg.'s and he had said that a RV that was being used for work, IE selling anything or even a small race car with sponsors names on it, was falling under a CDL, and needed to obay all rules and regulations on PA state roads.
i didn't know any of this, but anyone that is pulling a toy hauler with like a micro sprint in it, could be breaking some kind of regulation some where. this is how people with really large motorhomes class A and such with air can get away without a CDL, UNLESS they are for "hire", then that is a whole nother thing. he said he would constantly get guys around a local race track, and make them park and miss the races.

Most of the carriers that deliver RV's from the manufacturers to the dealers are "private contractors" and from what I've seen talking to them, most don't have commercial licenses. They tow with their "private" truck, with a fifth wheel/trailer with "temp tags"

I wonder if this is actually what kind of rig they are saying needs to stop at the scales? These are really "for hire" drivers delivering a vehicle. They get paid for their services and probably should fall into commercial rather than recreational driving... One thing to consider, the RV is most likely empty so they should never be "overweight" going across the scales

Hmmm, hope I haven't started the wrong people "thinking" if they do, there go the rates for RV delivery... <sigh>

what a lot of people don't realize is, that you don't have to have a "special" licenses to have a CDL. i am required to carry med cards and the same log books for my work truck, which is about a 11,000lb truck, empty. and i only have a class C. we were told anyone moving material with the intent for profit, will need DOT numbers and CDL, and will need to follow all rules and regulations. log books are only required outside of a 150 mile radius of your depature point, IE your office. i think this all applies once your GVW exceeds 10,000 lbs, which any full size truck, pulling just about anything will exceed by at least a little. we also need to follow the driving hours rules, i think it was no more then 10 hrs working, and still being able to drive, IE if it took 4 hrs to get there, you can only work 1 hr and turn and leave for home in the same day to get your full 10 hrs, "on the road". now this is all what we were told by the P.S.P. in small town pennsylvaina, after many "issues" we have had over the past few years.

Personal Rv are not required to stop at scales.
Personal RV must be licensed for the weight of their combination.ie: if your truck and 5th weigh 20,000lb your plate /ownership must reflect this. This never used to be enforced but is becoming more common, especially if travelling out of home area.
You need to be up to date with the regs of your province /state or you are fair game for BIG fines out of your province or state .
If you are towing for hire you need CDL if trailer is over 10,000lb or combination at or over 26,000lb.

Thanks for all the input folks.As I said before ,I know the atlantic Canada region well ,but with the new 5'er I may get to travel into Maine,New Hampahire and Vermont this summer and thought I would get a heads up on rules in the New England.I was hearing alot of things in Maine like fuel permits(doesn't pertain to me anyway) and geting weighed if 3/4 ton or more tow vehicle.Anyway thanks again.I will check at the border anyway.

by law if you are over 16k lbs (if i remember correctly) you are required to stop but most dot inspectors don't care about someone towing unless it looks unsafe.

In which states and provinces, please?

And, as several folks have already pointed out, RV's are generally not included in the DOT weight and inspection requirements.
