Hello from the U.P. of Michigan

Just signed up for my first post. Just purchased a 2011 Keystone Cougar 327RES and a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Crew Cab. Now I'm trying to get informed about a fifth wheel hitch. I have a 6'4" box and understand that I need a slide hitch. All new to me. Had a short bed 05 Ram before with a Cougar 245RKS and had a regular hitch and never had no problems, just had to be careful about tight turns. This new slider is a bit confusing. Do any of you have one. I'm looking at Pullrite Easyglide. Are they easy to line up? I understand there is something you install on the king pin. Well glad to be here and am glad to have another Cougar.

First welcome to the Forum.
Hope you enjoy your new 5er and 2500 CTD Dodge.
I do not know much about the Pullright Easyglide hitch although a lot of people use them.
I have a 15K Reese manual slider hitch in my 2500CTD Mega Cab Dodge with a short box.
As far as using the hitch I would think you will need to line the king pin up with the receiver on the hitch. I leave the jaws closed and unlock when I back-up the king ping opens the jaws and will close when hitched correctly. My DW stands to the side and ensures that the pin box is low enough for the pin box to ride up on the receiver and have the king pin engage the jaws on the hitch. I would think the Pullright would be the same.
Here is a site that might help you understand and provide information on the Cummins in your Dodge and the Dodge truck. It does cost to join but I believe it is will worth the $35 a year. I been a member for three years.

For info on the pullright hitch you might want to read this thread on this forum: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/showthread.php?t=518

Thanks for the info, lot of information especially the link. I think this is what I'm going to go with. Now, I wonder how the DW and I will get that beast out of the pickup bed when not in use. 300+ lbs, sounds like a dbl hernia. Any suggestions on that one. Thanks again.

Well, you could always get one of those engine hoists on wheels, works for an engine so it should work for a hitch!

I'll have to check that out. I know what your talking about. I've seen them in the Northern Tools & Machinery catalog I get in the mail.
When I get everything hooked together, I'll take a pic and try and figure out how to add it to my profile. Won't be until next week. I Was just reading our local paper and they posted an article that said most of the Federal & State Park campgrounds in our area have opened early due to our early spring weather. Although it has not been too warm, we are at least three weeks ahead of time for our area. Can't wait to get out there and try everything out. We had a 25 ft Cougar we traded in with one small slide and enjoyed it due to being so easy to maneuver. Hope we like the new one as well.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We have a fifth wheel and also a short bed. We opted to go with the Pullrite Super Glide hitch and that was 2 1/2 years ago and we are very happy with it. We happen to leave ours in the bed full time - as all we use our truck for is to haul our fiver. But we did install it with an engine hoist - you are right that thing is heavy.

Well, they're putting in the rails on my truck tomorrow and we will be picking up the new fifth wheel on Friday, yes we are excited! I've been really happy with the new truck, fun for me to figure out all the gadgets and my DW is excited to get the fifth wheel. We will have our first weekend out in it during the upcoming Memorial day weekend. Can't wait. I'll post a picture when we get it.

Hello from FL (formerly from UP)

Hello and welcome to the forum. We bought a new 2010 Cougar 327RES and absolutely love it! Still going back and forth with a few minor warranty issues but nothing major. Hopefully one more trip to the dealer will do the trip. We pull ours with a 2006 Ford 250 Diesel short bed. We have a Reese slider hitch but have never needed the slider. This 5th wheel has a great turn radius and we have made 90 degree turns and not had a problem. I am from the Michigan UP and still have family in Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Marquette. Hope you enjoy your new Cougar as much as we are enjoying ours.

Thanks Tom & Kelley. We are anxious to try this fifth wheel out. I am a little concerned about the lenght. Do you have any problems getting it into campgrounds? I am still trying to figure out the length. Looking at some sites, they say 32 feet, the manufacture's site says 36.5 feet. Now as an owner, what do you say it is? By the way, we are from Escanaba, right between Your friends and family in Iron Mt and Marquette.

Smitty we have not had any trouble getting into any campgrounds. The 327RES is definitely every bit of 36.5'. Our previous camper was 32' and we can sure tell a big difference but love the extra space. I am very familiar with Escanaba. I had an aunt and uncle that lived there for 60 yrs but both died recently. The UP is beautiful country; I wish I got up there more often than I do. Enjoy your new camper.

We have now had a chance to use our new fifth wheel on several camping trips.I think it just takes a little getting used to. I can't believe how long it is. I call it the white bullet. Do I think it's too big/long, well not on the inside but on the outside, hmmm.. well enough said. I've had no problems backing it into camp sites and we camp at mostly State Campgrounds. I find that the air conditioning outlets are two few. There are only four round ones in the entire fifth wheel. Two in the living area which also take care of the galley, one in the bath and the last in the bedroom, although the vents open directly on the air conditioner itself which is located in the living room ceiling. The diesel pulls the trailer with no problems. All in all, it takes a little getting used to. One other thing that I might mention, when the sun was shining on the passenger side which contains the slide that hold the J sofa and Kitchen counter, I could see sunlight shining inside at the bottom corners of the slide. When I went outside and looked under the slide, I could easily put my finger right into the trailer. The rubber does not seal the corners well at all. Easy place for critters to get inside. I now stuff foam in the bottom corners when the slide is extended. I still need to post pictures and will eventually get to that part.

Please post any further discussion about these topics (hitches, RV lengths, etc.) in the sections designated for 5th Wheels and other more appropriate categories. This section - New Member Check In - is designed for new members to introduce themselves and for current members to extend a "hello" and "welcome". Once that has been accomplished, we would ask members to post any subsequent conversations or follow-up and other topics in the categories which have been set up for that purpose. It makes it easier for people to search for and locate information and to keep the forum posts better organized. Thank you.
