Water heater bypass

I have a Bullet 210. First time winterizing it as I usually have a local dealer do it. I put the hot water tank in bypass connected the antifreeze to the pump inlet and turned on the pump. I had pink fluid coming out of the taps but also had it coming out of the hot water tank where I had removed the plug. It didn't make any difference which way I set the bypass valve, antifreeze still came out of the hot water tank. Is there another step I'm missing?

There is a one - way check valve that should isolate the water tank when you turn the bypass on. Perhaps it is not seating. It is in the piping near the tank.

Joe beat me to it. Wrote a detailed reply but my ISP lost it. The check valve/backflow preventer on the hot water out side could be defective allowing water to enter the hwh. I am assuming you have a one valve bypass. If you have 3 it literally blocks the water without depending on the valve.

Just one shutoff valve. Not 100% sure as to the location of the check valve. There's a large brass fitting coming out of the top of the tank but not sure how this would function. I've got pictures of the setup but don't k ow how yo post on here yet. I see a button to attach pics but it requires an HTTP address . The pictures are on my phone.

Click Go Advanced, and then add as an attachment (the paper clip)

The brass item at the tank in the picture looks to be the check valve.

The brass fitting will be the check valve. With a one handle bypass valve (vs 3) the bypass valve diverts the water from the inlet to the water heater. Once it is turned and bypassing the cold inlet it depends on the check valve to keep the diverted water from running into the hwh from the hot side. If your hwh keeps filling whether the valve is in bypass or not it sounds like the check valve has failed. Pull it out and they sell them at Lowe's, Home Depot etc.
