What about wheels??

Hello All...We just bought our Cougar28RLS and it has the oem Trailer Kings. They will be changed before our next trip based on all I am reading here. It is a toss up for me on the Goodyear Endurance or the Maxxis 8008. Both seem to be very good E rated tires. This bumper pull trailer is 6100 dry. I was also looking to add a TPMS system. My 2 questions are advice on the TPMS system and can the factory wheels do ok with going from D (45psi) to E (80psi)?? Thanks for all the great info as we are just starting out in this RV world.

Can't vouch for the Goodyear's, but the Maxxis tires have worked well for us.

Can also recommend the TST507RV TPMS, with flow through sensors, mounted on steel valve stems from www.vulcantire.com.

LRD tires are 65psi. Shouldn't have an issue going to 80psi LRE tires on the same wheels. You can verify the wheel rating via the stamping on the backside of the wheel.

Are you running 45 psi on the factory D tires or 65 psi?? If 65, and you want to go to 80, look on the back of the wheel. It should have the psi rating for the wheel, or if like mine, the weight allowed (2540 for D, 2830 E). My tires were ST225/75 R 15D and upgraded to E (the wheels indicated max. load 2830).

Good info...did not know about the stamping. The trailer is kept 150 miles from here so I will look next weekend.

Mike477, You might want to consider Carlisle Radial Trail HD tires, 225 75R15 LRE. Many of us have had excellent results with them and they are "load rated" the same as Maxxis and Endurance tires in the same size. WalMart is currently selling them for $67 per tire in that size. It's hard to beat the price and the reliability has been the same as Maxxis and Goodyear's new tire. I wouldn't consider the Goodyear Marathon, per its reputation, it's no better than the TowMax you currently are replacing.

I'd look through this section of the forum, there are a lot of discussions about the Carlisle ST tires, all good. So, as usual, it's up to you how to spend your money, but also, if you're like most of us, spending it wisely makes sense (and CENTS) LOL

Based on your first post in this thread, you said you've been running your LRD tires at 45 PSI. If so, they have been run at about 30% below their recommended rating and should be replaced based on "running underinflated".

All ST tires are inflated: LRC 50PSI, LRD 65PSI and LRE 80PSI. Almost all of the ST tire companies recommend inflating to maximum sidewall recommendation in all applications. This helps reduce sidewall flexing, heat buildup and tire failure.

I'd give the Carlisle HD's a serious consideration. I have them and they are excellent. As for TPMS systems, I got the TST 507 with flow-through sensors. I think they are a little long but I'd probably buy them again just because that are convenient and easy to use.

I Also have the Carlisle HD's and Tireminder 55 that work good for my single axle Hideout. Couldn't be happier...

Took my new Carlisle 225/75/15 LR E's out this week for their first trip. Ran pretty well. Trailer was not as stable as it has been, but it was also storming something terrible on the way up, so I certainly can't draw any conclusions based on 1 trip in heavy rains. It did seem to jostle our stuff less, as there were FAR fewer open doors and spilled items as I have had in the past.

I went from OEM China Bombs to Maxxis right after getting the 5th home. After 3 years I just went to Carlisle HD. Discount Tire matched WalMart price for me. In retrospect I may have just bought them from WalMart. But when the DT sales staff sees my purchase history they treat me right. The Carlisle has a 100# higher weight rating in my size and a 75 mph speed limit instead of 65. I like them.
Just me, I would pass on the Goodyears.
I didn't have one issue with the Maxxis.

I went from the china bomb 65 psi that came stock on the trailer to 80 psi Endurance this past spring. Noticeable improvement, no sway, towing with the new rubber. Touch wood, very happy with them.

Exactly my thinking and good experience with the Maxxis. Carlisle HD's next season at the beginning of four, trouble free years with Maxxis.

Hard to beat DT service at WM prices. Might have to take along some appreciation donuts for the boys in the tire bays.
