Battery or charger?

We took the trailer out last weekend and at the campground I could hear my battery boiling. I pulled the battery disconnect inside the unit. Later on the battery had cooled off. Wondering if it's a battery issue or a charging issue? The battery is only 2 years old and prior to this trip I had no issues with it.

Did you check the water level?

Hi,

Do you own a Multi-meter?

Usually a boiling battery is a result of being over charged. If you have a Multi-meter, reconnect the Battery Disconnect, plug the Shore power cord into an AC outlet and measure the voltage at the battery. If you get over 13.8vDC then the battery is being over charged. The charger(Inverter) is causing the boiling and needs to be addressed.

Also, as Face down suggested first top off the battery water level with Distilled water.

Many of the factory converters will overcharge. They're "dumb" and simply charge the battery to a pre-set voltage. As mentioned above, anything over 13.8v isn't great for the battery...

If you could figure out your converter model, that might be useful.

I checked the battery level prior to the first use this year and it was full. This trip was the 2nd trip out this year so I can assume the level was still good. That battery was at a full boil with little smoke trails emitting from the vents in the cap when I noticed it. I put a meter on the battery and it was being charged at about 13.4-6 v. Far as the model of inverter, I have no idea. When we got home I had the disconnect engaged and less than a week later the battery was dead.

I would be guessing but I think you have a bad cell in your battery ... plates do short out. 13.4-6 the converter is charging as if the battery is dead. I would pull the battery and have it tested ... there should be some time left on warranty after only 2 years. JM2¢, Hank

It's now June. I've seen hard chargers boil them off pretty quick - every 30-60 days. That voltage is not high, so my guess is same as above, you've got a bad cell and it's over charging the others to compensate.

If you hear it boiling, something is wrong...

Oh ya, it sounded like a pot boiling. I have another deep cycle battery that I can put on there but it is pretty new and I didn't want to fry it also. The currant battery was not marked with a date so I'm sure I'll end up eating that one.

If you're concerned, put a new one in and charge it for a day. Monitor it closely. Check water after 30 and 60.

Report back how many volts it's charging the new battery to. Best case - your old battery lost a cell and everything else is fine...
