Slides in or out ?

We live in Ontario Canada and our trailer is permament in our campground. I have asked a few people about whether we should leave the slides out or in for the winter. About 50% say in and 50% say it is ok to leave them out. What do you all think we should be doing with the slide outs after winterizing the trailer. It is a 40 foot Residence with a 20 foot and 10 foot slide out .

Thanks

If you will be away from the trailer all winter and not interested in using it through snow season, I would absolutely leave the slides in. They are typically far more watertight with them in.

The Keystone manual says to store the camper with the slides in. If the slides will be out for long periods of time they should be brought in once a week.

If you store your trailer with the slides OUT, you increase the surface area that can hold snow and leak when it melts. If you store it with the slides in, you decrease the surface area and eliminate much of the "rubber seal waterproofing" which will eliminate much of the potential for water leaks into the cabin. If you've ever looked at a trailer that sat all winter with water around the slide, you'd know why Keystone's Owner's Manual instructs to always store the trailer with the slides IN (travel position).

To bolster what was already said, picture 10" of snow, it is April and the temperatures finally reached 42 degrees and said snow is soft, mushy, and has about 4" of water already at the bottom. That water sitting on the slide top (roof) WILL find a way inside before it runs off on the ground. 50% of your original answers you received were wrong!

Another Option.

In our Resort in Florida when a TT or fifth wheel with slide outs becomes permanent they install an aluminum roof structure over the slide and screw aluminum angles to the sides to cover and seal the rubber seals. At times they do the same on the bottom side. There are even unit with a complete aluminum roof structure. At the end of life they are towed to TT Heaven.

Looking for pictures.
