Keep fridge cold

On long drives I need to keep the fridge cold. Can I keep it in dual mode and it automatically switches to propane or should I set it to propane? I left in dual but it seemed to have warmed up a lot. Maybe it was trying to run off the battery?

I keep mine in dual mode. The only time I had trouble and it didn’t switch automatically to propane is when I wasn’t level. I make sure the trailer is mostly level and the propane system engages before I start driving.

It should auto switch. I have had an issue before where my fridge didn’t ignite. Luckily it was on a short trip so didn’t ruin anything but I had to get the air out of the line. Not sure if that’s your issue or not but I just lit my stove and let it burn for about 30 seconds.

Also I don’t believe they will run off the battery but needs it to ignite the flame

Even if your trailer and fridge are level when you have the entire rig level when parked does not prevent it from being too far out of level when traveling, such as driving on high crown roads or climbing or descending long grades, especially in hot weather. For the past two years, we run our fridge on propane only, at the suggestion of Paul Unmack, the owner of ARP RV refrigerator protection controls. He said that propane does not shock the steel of the fridge boiler like electric does. When cooling is called for, propane brings the steel boiler up to temp slower than the instant heat from the electric elements. We don't see a big increase of gas usage either. We also installed his ARP device along with the extra fans, and this was after having the cooling unit replaced for the second time in less than a year. We are at four years now since the ARP device was installed, and the fridge is still working great. I have no interest in his company, except for having one of his devices installed. https://www.arprv.com/
