door latch lube

My old 5ver has a door latch I can't keep lubed. The part I refer to is the pot metal latch that slides and goes into the strike plate/receiver. I can hit it with silicon spray and it stays lubed for a few days and then becomes hard to shut again without pulling the release handle to draw back the latch. I am loathe to grease it up as I suspect it would attract flies and goo balls of crud.

Any bright tips out there? (BTW I KNOW WHAT WD40 STANDS FOR AND DON'T WITH TO DISCUSS WD40).

Try rubbing with a wax candle.

Bar soap works well also and washes out of clothes if you rub up against the latch bolt.

Kind of stayed away from spray lithium grease as it tends to collect crud. I have been using dry silicon spray lube and it lasts about 2-3 days before needing to be re-applied. Might try the wax or soap I guess but this means disassemble.... yuch

Just rub the exposed part of the latch with the wax, (paraffin), you can also rub some on the strike plate.

Does the latch system maybe need to be realigned?
