Toys! Toys! Toys! They are a blast but you can run through a lot of money! Good luck with them. I spent a lot of money on them and my wife finally told me...NO. Gave each one of my kids a boat (both virtually new) and a Ramcharger that I had totally rebuilt to the tune of about 30k (not including my labor) to my grandson. The only thing I kept is my CJ7. I used to have lots of fun "piddling", now I have lots of free time.....and extra money!!

So since it's a nice day I got the front trim all sealed up with dicor no sag then proceeded to start with the back while the sun was shining. Knew it had a small issue but wasn't expecting this. I found the problem, it's got that crazy magician wood in it. Every thing I touch disappears.

I wish I had some photos easily available of previous trailers, truck campers and 5ers that had some of that same 'special' wood. Sounds like another trip or several to HD and another DICOR order in the works

Worked on the back more, cut off the bad section of plywood roof, left about 4 inches of the old roof material to overlap on the new roof for the tack strip, unscrewed the rear storage cupboard and clothing storage area from back wall as well as the back bunk. I love this camper, I love this camper. Say it with me I love this camper. Right now it has a nice open air veranda feel to it. I joked with my wife about pulling all the crap out of the rear and making it into a toy hauler.
Most of the back will be replaced as it also had carpenter ants residing in it. Oh and a mouse chewed halfway through a stud.

Now, what was that? I love this camper? I love this camper???? Might just put some clear fiberglass panels across that open end so you could keep that "airy", "open" feel?

More work done today, got the back wall tore down. Added some wood back Into the top truss to eliminate the rotted parts on the end.

So we wrapped up the back today minus the metal. Had to wrestle with all the wires. Put the white board up in 4 sections all you can see is a 8in seam next to the table in the back. That will be trimmed out to cover it. Then we pre-built the lower wall section with a doubled up bottom plate and screwed it onto the outer framing. Then rebuilt the upper on some sawhorses and put it into position. Made some stringers for between 2 of the tops for extra mounting surface area. Now just gotta run some screws back into the cupboard and center clothes hanger to tie them back in. It was a good day on it especially since it was almost 90 out.

My father in law is considered doing a few of these a year after he retires in 2 years for a side gig.

Looks like you'll have $100k in labor when finished.

I see why campers lose their value so fast and are worth basically zero after 15 or 20 years. With so much work to fix, they really are throw-away items.

Roof patch is on, left 3 or so of inches of overlap, where I overlapped I used some dicor between for extra protection, used butyl tape on the steel where the rubber will touch on the side for more protection. Just like the front I filled the trim completely in and will tape over it tomorrow. Also got all the trim back on and put the ladder back on. The ladder is now hooked into 2x6 boards vs the garbage factory setup. Outside is wrapped up minus a few trim straps that were broken.
