Wdh
Hi all, I don't post that much but I do read a lot. I have a 2010 Passport 285RL that has a loaded weight of 6,240 lbs of which includes about 700 lb of my stuff. I have a 19 Silverado 2500 with Duramax. My question is do I need a WDH. Thanks for your thoughts and advice.

IMO a WDH that includes anti-sway will make the towing experience better. Think Equalizer 4 point, etc...

Simple answer is "YES" absolutely, it will make your towing experience much better & safer.

X2, WD with sway is not required but it will make your life much easier. I would use the Equalizer with sway built in. Not cheap but then peace of mind doesn’t come cheap.

I wouldn't dream of taking off on a trip with that size trailer, even on a 2500, without a wdh/sway system (and yes, I would go with the equalizer). Weights are one thing, sway caused by the long flat slab sidewalls of the RV are a completely different thing. Safety is THE one thing you want with that big swinging tail behind you. JMO

Some critical numbers are missing. 1. your actual tongue weight which you will only know with a tongue scale or driving to a Cat scale and doing the math. 2. you didn't post the hitch capacity which should be on a label on the hith. 3. The rear axle capacity (on a sticker on the door post of the truck, and the actual weights on the truck's axles, only known by a visit to a Cat scale.
Without that information everyone is strictly "guessing".
With that being said, most folks accept "best practice" is to use WDH with sway control. As previously mentioned the 4 pt system is popular with good reviews. That's a large "sail" to drag and safety should be your fist concern.

I also tow with a 3/4 ton truck. For my truck, which is diesel, the WDH is not required but as the others have said it is well worth using it. I use the Equalizer with 4 point sway control. It makes the towing experience rock solid. Personally, I would not even consider towing without weight distribution and sway control.

Sooner or later, someone is going to enter this thread, "strutting with their thumbs hooked into their suspenders, with a post that says, "Hell, I do it all the time, you don't need no stinkin' weight distribution hitch or sway control."....
For every one of "those" you'll find 10,000 who say, "I wouldn't leave home without it (WDH)."
Just the sheer numbers should "sway" (pun intended) your decision.....

I have a Montana and a B&W hitch in 2019 F350 dually. Twice I’ve moved a TT for friends. No, I don’t need a wdh but I’ll keep my Equalizer with 4 point sway control just in case of ??? I used the Equalizer pulling neighbors 6k # TT because it makes sense.
