Cat Camping

So hubby and I plan to move to full time RV life in the next several months. With that in mind, we took the 13 year old cat on his first camping trip.

First lesson learned - 409 will kill ants
Second lesson learned - Ants love cat food.
Third lesson learned - never camp without Home Defense with you, and use it as you set up in the camp site.

We had to be cautious going in and out of the RV so that the cat wouldn't escape, but we expect as he is out with us more often he will start to realize this is going to be home and he should not try to head out into the mean world.

I thought the litter box would be an issue, but it worked well in the toy hauler, so we frequently left kitty in the garage so we could come and go through the front door when our hands were full and not worry about his escape.

All in all camping with the cat was pretty good and we will continue to do it. Hope this motivates others to share the experience of camping with their feline family.

If you just spread Ajax around anything that is touching the ground, ants will NOT cross it.

We camped with Max our flame point Siamese until last month when he passed after 14 yrs.

We took my brown point Siamese cat Harry on our 5 week cross country trek in 2009. Didn’t know he had cancer and passed at 2 yrs old a month after we got home.

Our cat is pretty old, not sure, but about 12-15. Anyhow, she is a grump always and camping is no exception. She is a coward so she doesn't try to escape.

She figured out that when the slides come in she needs to go hide, and of course where it is almost impossible to get her, like in a corner under the bed. The actual driving bothers her the most. We have gone as long as a week with her camping.

Here is a simple trick to train your cat so it will never, ever attempt to go out the door again......

Get a squirt gun filled with water. Get something loud you can bang, like 2 pot lids.

Now, you stand outside the door of the camper, out of site, off to the side.

Open the door wide! (and oh, put a leash on the cat just in case it does "bolt.")

Let the cat approach the open door. As soon as the cat sticks it's nose out, beyond the door, spray the cat with the squirt gun and bang the pan lids, and scream like you are being killed.

It will scare the cat out of it's mind and retreat back into the camper.

If you do this a second time, the cat will never, ever, ever attempt to go to the door again.

This is how we trained ALL our cats to become great camping cats. And it works. We could leave the door wide open and the cats we've had over the years would not even attempt to approach them, standing wide open. They were fine when the door was shut or the screen was shut. But open them, and they'd run. It works. Try it.

Thank you for the Ajax tip. $1.25 at my local dollar tree so we will try. I am really sorry for the loss of your cats. They are a part of the family whether it is 2 years or 14 years.
