2006 2500 GMC Tow/haul comes on by itself.

.

I know this is not a truck forum but I have found it to be a great resource on a lot of matters.

My buddy has a 06' 2500 GMC. Just recently his Tow/Haul comes on by itself. He cannot cancel it with the slide button. It is a hit and miss kind of thing. One day it does it and the other it does not.

He is going to dig into it but I thought I would ask here just incase one of you have had the same problem.

I have no idea to the solution to this problem, but, this post is makes me feel like we have a lot more to offer than just RV stuff. There will be a knowledgeable member that comes along to offer assistance.

I've owned a few GM products before. I've read on other forums that with 200X model years, a wire that runs through the column shifter gets weak and can break (or short out), causing intermittent, reproducible failures with the tow haul function. There are youtube videos that illustrate how to replace the shifter or repair the wire.

Buster is correct. A small wire will break at the point the column meets the dash. It hasn't happened on my 07 yet but did on my 02. After fixing it a couple of time, splicing and soldering, I ran the wire to a momentary button and did away with using the one on the shifter handle

Thanks everyone. My buddy tore into the steering column yesterday and it was just as you said, broken wire where the shift lever attaches. He spliced in a wire, installed a momentary switch and all is good.

Love this forum . . . . .
