Class 2 is further subdivided
Class 2a 6k to 8.5k (1/2 ton pickups)
Class 2b 8.5k to 10k (3/4 ton pickups)
Classes 1-3 are considered "Light Duty"
Classes 4-6 are considered "Medium Duty" (MDT)
Classes 7-8 are considered "Heavy Duty" (HDT)
Class 9 is a special class for weight limits beyond 33k pounds (In most cases these require special permitting to be on the road)
The people that determine model numbers are well aware of these classes as well. Note that starting with the 3/4 ton pickups and vans, the truck models follow the class numbers:
250/2500 (class 2b) 8.5k-10k
350/3500 (Class 3) 10K-14K
450/4500 (Class 4) 14K-16K
550/5500 (Class 5) 16K-19.5k
650/6500 (Class 6) 19.5k-26k
750/7500 (Class 7) 26k-33k
