Cougar vinyl roof?

Not really sure what the roof on my cougar 330rbk is called other than vinyl. I had some guys wash the camper while at the beach this past week. They wouldn't "treat" it because it was vinyl. The keystone website didn't help and the dealer never said. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to do anything to it before I put her up for winter. Any help or suggestions would be great.

It is most likely the Dicor EPDM roof. All it needs for maintenance is a gentle washing and checking the sealant for cracks. If the sealant is cracked it will need to be cleaned off and replaced with the correct sealant.

There is a possibility that your RV roof is not EPDM rubber but TPO. TPO is glossier and not as "slippery" when wet as an EPDM rubber roof and you can use Dicor sealants on both of these types. In any case it is most likely one of these two types of "rubber" roof.

Personally, I wouldn't remove any cracked sealant unless it isn't compatible with a rubber roof - silicone or other sealants that contain petroleum distillates. If the proper sealant has been previously applied, all you need to do is clean it thoroughly and make sure it is dry before you apply another coat of Dicor sealant.

For the majority of the places on the roof that need to be caulked, you will need a self-leveling type of sealant.

You may have an EPDM (rubber roof) or you likely have a TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin). In recent years EPDM has been phased out (weight consideration) and TPO has been replacing it more and more. The easiest way to determine which you have is to look at the underside of the membrane. If it is black, it's EPDM, if it is white on both sides, it's TPO.

Here is a link to "all you'd ever want to know" about care of RV roofing: http://dicorproducts.com/resources/rudys/

DICOR is the major supplier of roofing material for the RV industry and their products are regularly used on Keystone RV's.

Good Luck

Cleaning the roof

There is a Dicor Cleaner and Sealant in one, spray on type I bought from the dealer, which they recommended. It cleans it real well, just wet, spray on, brushed with a soft brush, and rinse off. Real easy to use.

I almost got carried away - It was cleaning real well, and I was spraying and brushing, and getting the roof really white, so I did another spraying and brushing - only to realize it is a roof which nobody ever sees. Saved my effort for waxing the sides of the RV.
