New to Keystone - what to look out for?

Hey all - Looking to take ownership of a 2019 34TSB this coming week. This will be our second TT -- coming from a Dutchmen Aerolite 284BHSL. Any pointers on what to be on the look out for my walk through, or known gotchas with Keystone products would be great!

I think all RVs have "gotchas" built in....we just don't know what they are until we give them a whirl.

Check the cost of the insurance premium. My Bullet 220RBI was over $600 a year. When I inquired why it was so high I was told it had something to do with the manufacturer rating, a multiplier they use. Both the comp and collision were three times the cost of comparable coverage for my Prime Time Avenger, after adjusting for the cost of the camper. I don't know if by manufacturer they meant Keystone, or just the Bullet line.

If Wake Forest is somewhere where it gets kind of warm, and you are looking for a big long trailer, get one with TWO (2) A/C units. Specs on the trailer you are looking on the Keystone site didn't say if it was even wired for a 2nd A/C. It ain't hard to put a 2nd in if the wiring is in place. They also call that trailer a "1/2 Ton" which is kind of stretching it; be very sure your pickup can pull that thing with a generous safety margin. It is almost 12K GVWR and 1/2 ton generally is getting too much of a work out at that towing weight and pin weight.

I agree with the above posts, particular George's AC assessment. That beast needs two AC's no matter where you camp. You won't be sorry. And it might be quite a haul for a half-ton.

Yup! Took delivery last week. Yup, I calculated the payload/loaded weight/etc for my 2017 F250 KR Diesel, and I should be able to safely tow and carry all my gear/passengers.

Got the Cougar 34TSB w/
+ Second AC
+ Furrion Observation camera

Best deal I could find was at RVOutletUSA -- In VA. Camping world was dicking me around.

Check the roof/seams/marker lights religiously to make sure caulking hasn't separated.

Quality tires for sure.... nothing will ruin your experience like a "blow-out!" It is not usually just the tire, but a large part of your wagon will be damaged as well.

It is all Chinese crap. I would need to change those out myself.

RV roof inspections should be done routinely at certain intervals throughout the year, even on a new coach. Some say annually, some say twice a season. I personally inspect at the start of the camping season, midway prior to a big trip, and at the end of the season when I winterize.

And remember, there are several different sealant products (primarily from Dicor) that are use on roofiing materials and adjacent wall structures. Know the difference as some are self leveling and some are not.

This going to sound wierd but, check the toilet seal in the toilet. We bought one that didn't have one and the one we just bought wasn't installed right. Put water in it to see if drains or stays. It should stay

Overall, I like my Keystone design, but the short list of issues even after "PDI".
1) The bed sucks, check the size and get a better mattress on your own, let them throw away existing bed to avoid you having to dispose of it.
2) Finish issues: trim on doors/cabinets sharp, I had to sand all the edges eventually
3) should have 2 batteries. Wired usually 2x12V in parallel but check if correctly done. If not one battery is underused, other stressed more.
4) The left my dump valves open, make sure they are closed; Messy first dump...
5) Put everything into "towing" condition and check operation. Such as battery switch on. If off, batteries won't charge even though trailer works when plugged in.
6) Check you truck to be sure charge line to trailer works, mine had bad fuse.

We have the 2019 34TSB also and love it. After our dealer inspection we went in to sign the papers while they buttoned it up. When we got it home we opened it up and heard a crunch as soon as the dinette slide started to open. They obviously didn't get the cabinet doors secured shut before closing the slide and it ripped it off when we opened it. This slide blocks access so you really have to make sure these doors are secure before you close it up. New door just came in and they will be doing the repair in a couple weeks when I can get it in. For some reason I can't turn this darn picture.



Did you get the updated Capital Grill in the metal pullout versus the wood due to the recall?

we put 'kiddie latches' on doors to prevent opening, the kind that are adjustable and removable when we camp. The stock latches don't always work...
The kind that boats use are better, but bigger job to change over.

Did you get the updated Capital Grill in the metal pullout versus the wood due to the recall?

Definitely be picky in your walkthrough. Inspecting trim finish, cabinet finish, sealants finish. I just had to have a bunch of warranty work done including a new front cap on my 2017 Keystone Bullet
