Water heater - Luke warm on electric, hot on LP

Hi all,

Did some searching but couldn't find the solution. Most threads talk about luke warm with electric or LP.

I just got back from out maiden voyage in our 2018 keystone hideout. Everything went pretty darn well I Have to say, but I did notice one thing. When using the hot water heater, we were able to take nice hot showers when using propane. On electric power however, even when leaving it on overnight, it would only get lukewarm. Not NEARLY as hot as LP.

Is this normal?

I'll check on brand tonight and report back. Regarding switches, it only has two. Electric on/off, and gas on/off. There are no other bypass valves etc available. It (seems) like a pretty idiot-proof design.

I don't know your circumstances or how you tried to use it, but, LP will be hotter, quicker.

Regardless of brand, it is possible that the 120 volt thermostat has failed. This is the one that controls the electric side of the water heater. I’m not sure , but I believe the element either works or doesn’t, no part way. There will be two thermostats, the other one is 12 volts which works with the gas side.

I have suburban there is 2 black push button try re setting the water heater . I have replaced the rocker switch on my heater that fixed the problem. I also forgot and ran the electric heater with the switch on . Reset by pushing the black button.

I believe Bob is on the right track. The thermostat would be one of the first things I would check. You will find two, 12 volt and 110 volt. There should also be a reset button where they are located, one for each thermostat. Be VERY careful fooling with the 110 side. We don't have enough members and we don't want to lose any.

If your WH is a Suburban, be sure to check the little, almost hidden switch located in the lower left side of the outside compartment. If your Hideout has a switch for electric on the inside control panel, the outside switch also has to be in the on position. The lukewarm water you are getting on electric could be just residual heat from when you used the gas side of the WH. Agree with others about the electric side thermostat, but, on a new trailer it would seem unlikely. Check the switches.

.

Does the electric HW work if you are plugged into a normal 15 AMP circuit or do you need to be plugged into a 30 / 50 AMP circuit ?

You're probably OK on 15 amps, as long as nothing else is on except the converter and / or inverter, and your 50 feet or less from your outlet with heavy enough (12 gauge or heavier cord).

Try it, the worst you'll do is trip a breaker (either pedestal or power center... maybe both) No harm, no foul!

Good Luck,

First thing you may want to check is the electric element make sure someone didnt dry fire the heater on electric you need to take a ohms resistance reading do you know how to do that

May not apply in your case, but for anyone reading this who isn't familiar with the wiring, it is possible to turn on the electric element with the heater tank empty. This will cause an almost immediate burn out of the element, only fix is to replace.

what is the ohms reading? could be your element shorted and is causing the overload.
