Garmin's RV660LMT-S vs. RV770LMT-S
Hi folks,
I'm looking at getting a RV GPS. Been doing some research, and seems I've narrowed down to Garmin's 660 and 770 RV units. BLUF: I'm leaning toward the 660. The reasons are as follows:
- Price: 660 - $250; 770 - $400. Obvious 660 advantage
- Traffic Updates: 660 receives traffic updates through reception on the power cord. 770 requires a bluetooth connection with smartphone. Advantage 660 at least IMO because of 770's "reliance" on smartphone, phone battery drain particularly with bluetooth on, phone data plan usage, and cell service availability.
- Screen: 770 is slightly larger screen and has latest technology. 660 screen still seems very adequate being slightly smaller and tech that is a generation old. Not sure $150 is worth the 770's screen.
These are the major differences as I see them. But I want to run past the expertise and experience of the brain trust here. All input appreciated.
BTW...since the RV is "on-ice" until spring, I probably will be waiting until early next year before pulling trigger. Hopefully prices may drop further.
Regards,
Mike

I don’t own one yet but I’ve been told the Garmin 760 is the way to go.

Thanks for your input! Yes...the 760 is a nice unit. Although it is still available, the 760 has been replaced by the 770.

I own a Garmin 760 LMT with back up camera. this GPS works pretty good, but I always check the routes with google maps just to verify it's not taking me on a wild goose chase as they sometimes will! As far as the back up camera, while many will disagree with me on the camera, it works fine for being able to see behind you for backing or even while driving if you connect to running lights instead of backup lights.

I first purchased the 770 even though reviews weren't stellar compared to the 660. On our first trip, the 770 kept losing GPS and had me driving in lakes and nearby routes, trying to correct me to get back on the road I was already on. Got a refund when I got home and purchased the 660. No problems with it and yes, you get the free traffic. IMO, the 660 is the way to go.

Glad you were able to get you $$$ back. How long ago did you buy the 770? Yes many of the earlier reviews weren't good. Guessing that Garmin released before the bugs were worked out.
The big question...was your F-350 doing the backstroke in those lakes?!?!?
Thanks for the feedback,
Mike

I bought it in probably April or early May this year, and returned it after our first trip early June.

Yep...that had to be early in the initial release. Did you do a map update when you first got it? Seems Garmin has now addressed those earlier issues.
I am leaning towards the 660 for reasons addressed in my original post. But would like to hear others' thoughts.
Thanks!
Mike

I have been using the RV 760LM for the last year. Works for us. It does connect to the Smart phone and does a good job with the phone thing. Mid summer we got a 16 Ram with the U-connect (no navigation or sirius). I am only so so in this tek world, but I think the phone connects to both. It will stream music into the U-connect and the phone rings through the 760 along with weather updates. The traffic updates are spot on.

Our experience with the 760 has been the same as Frank's. It isn't really a big deal. There is a limit to how much information one should expect from a GPS. Google maps on your iPhone does about the same thing.....free.

I usually just use my phone also. Have nav on the truck but the trips are usually never identical so I end up driving with the phone GPS. What I like about Google maps is that they show traffic issues and always show 3 route options which I don't get on my truck nav. I can change routing on truck from fastest, shortest or economical but neither will show the whole route on the screen to see how its taking you before you start. I thought the reason people were buying the rv GPS was because it would let you list the specs of your coach to avoid low bridges and stuff. Yes I know there is a phone app that does that as well.
