New DEF fluid from Rural King

Seen a new DEF fluid at a local Rural King today called TRCair ultrapure DEF.
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it yet? Says its ISO 22241 rated.
Price was under $7 for 2.5 gals.

That's a good price...AND they are getting an old closed down K-Mart in our town ready to be turned into a Rural King. Win/Win!

Good price. I just fill my DEF at the truck stop so I don't have to deal with buying a container of it. Plus at the truck stop it is around $2.79/gal.

Don't overlook heavy truck shops and lube shops. For instance, the Mack Truck dealership near me will top off the DEF of any vehicle from a VW on up thru a Class 8 semi truck... for $1.79 a gallon. That has been their price for some time, not a sale item. They will even fill a container if you bring it in. Allied Oil and Tire near me offers the same deal.

We were in Zephrhills Fla in Dec & that's what's in the old KMart there as well.
I bought 2-2 1/2 gal jugs for $6.95 each, added both to my DEF tank & have since refilled it, had no problems on an entire tank of it.
I wish I could find it here in Arizona that cheap.

$2.79 a gallon could be a bargain. DEF comes from Saskatchewan. Neighbors work best together. I hate to play the political card I just hope it can be sorted we both buy from each other an import tax nobody wants. Just my thoughts.

I don't think it is wise to play the political card here....and against the rules if I recall.....

Maybe if we simply ignore the politics of the previous statements they will "fade away".... That said, WalMart sells "Autotec DEF" in a 2.5 gallon blue container for $8 and they have a two pack of 2.5 gallon containers of DEF in another brand for $15. https://www.walmart.com/ip/DEF-Diese...Jugs/837857789

While there may be "quality DEF" and "cheap DEF" my truck apparently isn't "educated enough" or "sophisticated enough" to need the "caviar brand" so I've been using the WalMart blue containers for 30K+ without the truck skipping a beat.

travelin texans, the above link (or a price comparable substitute) should be available at WalMarts in every state.

Just general info here but when purchasing DEF pay attention to the date code as that stuff does have an expiration date. Also if you have problems, make sure you tell the service guy that you use the Mopar brand DEF, telling them any other brand and they could deny a warranty. This is after talking with my service guy.

DEF is too cheap in the grand scheme of RVing to worry about. About the same per gallon as a gallon of $3.25 diesel fuel right now. I use either the Walmart store brand or the Peak, also from Walmart. Hauling, I'll use a jug every 2000 miles or so. Bobtailed, 3000 miles or so

Of course, you can always 'delete' your truck for a couple thousand bucks and never worry about DEF again

Tinner2002, is your service advisor telling you can't use any other brand of DEF on a Cummins? I would call their bluff. DEF is DEF as long as it is clean and fresh (not expired).
I usually get DEF for my Peterbilt running a Cummins ISX from a 50 gallon drum it is branded Valvoline. No warranty issues for 20K hours and 100K miles

Doing a little math, $2000 to delete the emissions system or 2.5 gallons of DEF every 2500 miles. 200,000 miles of DEF 80 @ 2.5 gallons @ $8 per container would cost $640. Hmmmmmm I can buy a lot of ??? with $1360 that's left over (or leave my $2000 in the bank drawing interest).....

Plus, we can all "see the mountains" a little bit clearer without the soot in the air.

Tinner12002 - I think you should bring your service adviser a copy of the Magnassun Moss Act. Pretty sure it states something to the affect of, if a dealership requires you to use their product in order to not void a warranty, the dealership must supply you with the product, oil, DEF, etc at no charge to you.

The Service Adviser could end up in some deep weeds spreading bad info like that.

Tinner, what your service advisor told you is a damnedable lie. And for all the reasons listed above. Think back to Ford trying to use their own grease zerks in the 1961/62 Fords. Not gonna happen.

This past fall, we made a trip to and from California; put on about 2500 miles. The DEF gauge did not move off 100%. Thinking something was amiss, I had two different dealers look at it. (2016 3500 CTD) First dealer flashed the computer and said to fill the tank to see how much it took. Did so; it took just over 2 gal. With it full, then drove 6-700 miles and gauge still did not move. Second dealer drained around 4 gal from tank and gauge moved to just under 40 %. I was told that DEF use is higher in hot weather and under load. He also said they have had problems with contaminated DEF that came from a truck stop. I generally fill at Pilot/Flying J truck stops. He suggests that I not fill the tank until we are back on the road because DEF has a short shelf life especially in hot weather. My concern was that engine was not using DEF the way its supposed to. Was told that if that were the case, there are numerous warning devices that would have let me know. Truck runs fine and mileage has stayed the same. This is the first winter we have not been traveling a lot with this truck so I'll just have to get used to how it works in cold weather.

Of course they tell us all we should use the Mopar brand to avoid warranty issues...but we don't! He was just saying that if you have issues then its best to tell them that you use Mopar brand all the time! Might be stretching the truth a bit but I can't see that they would ever be able to tell what brand you used unless you were adamant that you used Walmart brand or something. Better safe than sorry.

The gauge on the Def tank doesn't move the same as your fuel gauge. It doesn't start measuring until you get it down almost a quarter, then it starts measuring accurately.

Tinner,
Yeah I understand. Our single biggest problem with DEF up in the frozen north is keeping it in liquid form. Most of the commerical trucks have tank blankets and or heaters though. I admit I get the Motorcraft brand for my F-350 and it sits in the garage most of the time In 11K miles I have only filled my DEF tank once, because they top it off when I get my oil changed. I keep an eye on the level though.

ADQ K9,

Most Ford dealerships do top off the DEF when doing an oil/filter change. Ours is the same. Thinking about it, that never really "changes out the DEF" that's in the tank, but only adds fresh to the "maybe stale" DEF already there. I think that during the design phase, Ford engineers built the DEF tank capacity to "sort of match" the oil change interval, so the DEF tank would be "almost empty" when the oil change is due. That didn't work out very well and most of us find we have over half a DEF tank left when the oil change interval comes up. So, topping off the DEF tank only adds fresh DEF to the existing fluid. Essentially, doing that, some of the original DEF is probably still in the tank at 50K miles.

I finally started telling my dealership not to top off the DEF. I let my tank get down to "almost empty" and then refill it at home. I suppose I could stop by the dealership at that time and ask them to refill it, but at $3.50 a gallon at Ford and $7 for 2.5 gallons at WalMart, I haven't found WalMart to be a "bad deal".... The manufacture date is on the WalMart containers, so you can "pick and choose" what's on the shelf to get the freshest DEF. That 55 gallon barrel at the Ford dealership might be "nearly expired" depending on how many trucks flow through the oil change line..... Not to mention that DEF is caustic to painted surfaces and needs to be washed off if spilled. I've watched the techs use a red towel to wipe up spilled DEF with no water in sight. I prefer that not happen to my truck's finish. That's not intended to be a "slam" toward service techs, but I don't think most appreciate what ammonia/urea does to paint......
