2.5" shank will not fit in receiver

When I bought my WDH it came with a 2" shank. I used the sleeve on my 2.5 inch receiver to reduce it down to 2". Ordered a 2.5" shank got it test fit and it does not slide in easily. Should I sand/grind it down to make it fit?

I would first look for corrosion/rust in the receiver that may be blocking your new shank from sliding into the receiver tube. I'd suspect that it's machined with "just enough accuracy" to function, but likely not a "precision fit". That said, it should slide into the receiver tube without modification to the shank.

John,
No rust or corrosion in the receiver tube, the 2" adapter sleeve slides in and out without a problem. Shank is a Curt part #17131 Seems to be catching on the corners at least that is where the paint is scraping off

Hmmmmm

The Curt website says this, "The 2-1/2" horizontal shank is designed to fit any 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" trailer hitch receiver. This makes it the perfect choice for a CURT Commercial Duty class 5 hitch or other heavy-duty hitches with 2-1/2" receivers. The shank features rounded edges for easier insertion into the receiver tube, and it has a 5/8" diameter hole to accept a hitch pin or hitch lock for secure mounting in the receiver." (Bolded for emphasis)

https://www2.curtmfg.com/part/17131

I wonder if the one you bought wasn't "completed" ??? The description indicates "rounded edges" which, at least the way I see it (FWIW) yours apparently doesn't ??????

Well they are rounded but not like the sleeve the part that goes into the receiver is like an I beam edges are rounded a little. I have to question the tolerance though since it is "Made in China" Not really sure where the Ford receiver hitch comes from though.

Days like this, I'm always so comforted knowing that Harbor Freight offers throwaway angle grinders for $15.

Just got back from the shop I purchased/ordered it from local Curt dealer. They gave me two options 1 Order another, 2 Grind it down to fit. I chose option 2 and was out of there in less than 15. There is some thing to be said about buying from a local brick and mortar store that has a service dept too. I have yet to purchase a grinder for my tool collection

I've discovered over time that various manufacturers have different ideas about the "rounded" edges inside the receiver and on the shanks that go into them. I've had to "custom match" on more than one occasion. My little go to tool for that is;

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-1...64CV/202517734

It's corded because the battery operated ones just don't seen to hold up as well as I'd like when doing a big chore like rounding granite corners. They come in handy for all kinds of things....and look nice in your tool collection.
