What does this thingy do?

It looks like a vent and its under my counter attached to the sink drain line. Its pretty stinky under there at the moment. Do these parts wear out? Can i replace it? What would happen if i taped it shut? Thanks

That "thingy" is called a cheater vent. It takes the place of a roof vent for your kitchen sink plumbing. It may be cracked or have worked loose causing odors to escape. It can be taken apart and/or replaced. Don't tape it shut.

I like that Hepvo valve. Anyone here actual using one? If the Hepvo valve eliminates the cheater vent, why would taping it off be bad?

The valve when operating correctly allows air to enter the tank but not to exit. Taping it shut will make draining the tank very slow if not impossible without siphoning water from the traps. It is there for a reason .... replace it. A new one costs around $5 .... probably cheaper than the tape. Home stores and plumbing supplies sell them for less than RV dealers. (whoda thunk it) The Hepvo replaces the P-trap not the cheater vent.

The cheater vent has a different function than the pee trap. Without a vent in the line water will not always drain becoming air locked in the line. The pee trap prevents smells from coming back up the line from the tank..

Unfortunately, if you have the cheater vent it needs to stay open.. however if smells are coming from it you will need to either try and repair it or just replace it with a new one.. They are an inexpensive item and usually can be found at home stores like Lowes and Home Depot.
