Will the gas struts hold a heavy mattress

We recently traded our 2009 18 ft Dutchman for a 2008 Keystone Laredo 265rl. The previous owner of the fifth wheel replaced the stock mattress with a very high end residential pillow top mattress. It is a dream to sleep on but I have yet to use the under bed storage as I am not sure if the struts will support it. Also, will I be able close it. If anyone can give me some advice, I would appreciate it.

Likely the shocks will not hold up the weight of the upgraded mattress. The only way to know for sure is to try it. Who knows you may find some long lost and forgot about treasures under there.

Raven, I'm a little more optimistic about them holding. Any reason you haven't tried to lift it yet?
If it won't quite hold, get the model number from the strut, call the manufacturer, and they will tell you what you need. It will be the same length, but probably ten pounds higher.

I just changed the struts in our 5er and went from 60# to 80# and they work great. Of course I don't know just how heavy your mattress is compared to mine

Cheap fix?

For as rarely as we open the under bed storage, a sawed off broom stick works great.

Good Luck, and enjoy the new rig!

Well after the wife put the bedding on I should have gone higher in poundage. The 80# struts hold it up but lifting is still a heavy. The mattress is a home not RV mattress so that accounts for the difference I guess
