Question Can a 2007 Jeep GC Laredo v6 safely tow 5000lb 12-ft utility trailer?

Hi people,

This is not an RV question but I have frequented many of the threads on this forum over the years, and couldn't think of a better place to ask this question!

So like the title says, i'm wondering if a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a V6 engine would tow my utility trailer that is 1500lb (and want to tow up to 5000lb gross).

I am looking for a new car that can do what I said. I had a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2006 Ford Explorer that could tow it fine before. I like the Jeep, but i'm wondering if i'd have problems because google says 3500 is the tow capacity (though for my explorer it said ~3000lb, and after an aftermarket hitch it towed 5000lb fine)

How exactly do you guys calculate tow capacities? Do manufacturers sometimes put lower than it can do in reality?

Thank you all for your time! I am sorry if I missed some ultimate tow calculation guide, I didn't see one

What is going on the trailer that weighs 3500lbs.? And, is the trailer rated to carry that much? I ask because an RV has different towing characteristics than a flat bed utility trailer. Weights will be weights though. Look at the sticker inside your driver door and post what the payload is along with gvw and gawrs. That will be a start.

Another thing to check is the receiver on the vehicle. What class is it (rated to tow)? If the vehicle is only rated for 3500lbs. it very well may have a light (low) rated (weight) unit.

Oh, welcome to the forum as well!

As you see I have a Passport 195RB. The dry weight, door sticker, is 3775 and fully loaded at a local recycle place it's 4400'ish lbs.
At first I pulled with a Ford Explored Sport. No, not the old Sport. 2017 Explored Sport is kinda like a Limited with a 3.5 twin turbo and different everything. Rated to pull 5k lbs.
Lots of HP but just not enough ***. To be happy traveling you need not just HP and rated spec's but a full frame and enough wheel base.

I say no.

With a short wheelbase like that I'd be worried about the tail wagging the dog. Too much weight (5K) on a short trailer.

+1 for Jim ^^^!

Not a good idea on my opinion. What does your Jeep Dealer say, and as mentioned, what's your sticker say?

Good Luck,
