Portable Waste Tank on Ladder?
Hello All,
Has anyone had experience hanging a Camco Rhino 28gal portable waste tank on the ladder? I have 290RLS with a ladder and the tank has a hook for hanging on a ladder step. This looks to be a no-brainer, but I am wondering about traveling with 45lbs or so hanging on the ladder. I would appreciate any feedback on how this has worked out for others. Thanks!!

I have one and used it for one trip but i’ve since moved it to the bed of the truck..i think it’s too much weight on the flimsy ladder supports when going over bumps…i think some people use a spare tire carrier under the trailer to transport but not sure about clearance

We have both the 36 gal and 28 gal Camco Rino portable tanks. I gave up on the 36 because it doesn't have the front wheel and it was killing my back when pulling it to the truck tow ball from the side of the trailer.
However, both have traveled cross country attached to the ladder on the back of our 25RDS with no ill affects.
Be sure to secure the tank with at least one ratchet strap so there isn't any movement. Also don't hang it in a manner where it can get buffeted by the wind while towing.
Regarding 45lbs, I seriously doubt the empty 28 gal tank by itself weighs 45lbs.

I doubt if my empty tank weighs 10 lb. and I carry it on my ladder strapped tight without any problems.

Cougar, prepare to be amazed! The Rhino 28 gallon weighs 49 pounds and the 36 gallon weighs 54 pounds. Truth is stranger than fiction.

There had to be one of us in the forum!
I just went out to our shop and weighed the 28 gal Rhino: 38.2 lbs.
Those weights are probably shipping, or complete package which would be the tow bar handle, assorted hoses, and connectors.

We have the 28 gal, no wheel. We've carried it on the ladder without issue. Yes, strap it down so it ISN'T banging around.

I weighed the same tank without the tow bar, so I'll assume the tow bar adds 5.8 lbs?
You won't be hanging it on your ladder with the tow bar attached.

Storing portable waste tank on ladder
Yes, we have been traveling for 21 months with our 28 gallon tank hanging on our ladder (about 33k miles). We haven't had any issue with damage to the ladder or tank. I did wrap rubber sheet around the step the hangar sits on and used pieces of pool noodle around the bars and lower step to keep the tank from rubbing on the ladder. I use two ratchet straps to hold it in place. The only negative is, of course, having to take it off to access the roof. Also hoisting it up onto the ladder takes a bit of strength and agility.

I have a 21 290rls also . I travel with my 28 gal tote on the ladder and have had no issues . The tote doesn’t weigh enough to worry about. Just strap it good

Wouldn't recommend if new trailer
Hi rak - we have a recently purchased Cougar 29RKS and the first trip out I attached the tank to the ladder and strapped it down - drove from Fort Stevens State Park back to Hillsboro and ended up with the tank damaging the ladder. I'd not recommend you travel with the tank on the ladder. Pics below.
Total cost of repair (new replacement ladder not covered under warranty and install) $450.00
For future - I'm looking to get a hitch extension bar and use that to attach the tank to. Need an extra gray water hose storage place anyways.
(sorry - no matter how I rotate the pics and save them they came out rotated incorrectly. )

Agreed. I can't imagine the tote doing that kind of damage without some help. Just hanging, tightly strapped to the ladder...there's no way it does that.

Nope - didn't back into anything, hung the tank on the trailer when we left the campsite, didn't back up the trailer at any point in the trip home. Got out to unload everything into the garage and seen that and was really surprised.

Sorry, but the laws of physics still apply here, and the tote hanging on the ladder did not do that, no way, no how. It is clearly from an impact, either you backing into something, or someone hitting or backing into the back of your camper whether you knew it or not.

Exactly. There is NO way that happened without the poster backing into something, or someone backing in to them. Impossible.
