Florida to Redwoods
Planning a month long trip in late may from central Florida to California in the cougar 27sab. Would like to try for 3 national parks (redwoods, grand canyon and Yellowstone). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. How do you plan a trip this long?

Doesn't matter. I'm wide open for loops.

I love Yellowstone, but never have camped there. I could spent a month there easily! Don't be in a big hurry driving around in Yellowstone. The Bison on the roads are slow movers. LOL

Dwighop, Howdy;
As temps. will be increasing during your excursion, I'd consider the thought of Start South then swing up.
I'm in Southern N.M. right now and my temp. as I write is in the low 60's and headed towards 70. Yet they are expecting snow in the "4 Corners" today...
By May we should be doing 80's and 90's ..... Yellowstone will still be subject to snow storms in May .....
Always something to think about..

Please keep us posted on yor travels. I am in central fl myself and have considered this same trip. Is 1 month really enough time? I'd have to wait until the summer when te kids are out of school.

Only a month? Skip the redwoods. They’re great to see, but not if you’re in a hurry. Save that time for a sane pace to and through the other two parks. Yellowstone is worth at least a week on its own.
Take your time on the long haul and find good overnight stops between you and Yellowstone/Grand Canyon.

A night or two in Chaco Canyon, NM would add to your experience!

Looking more like the 6 week option. Redwoods have been replaced by Sequoias. Family isn't big hikers so don't think time will be an issue. Some white water, maybe horse back stuff, and light trail hiking. Couple of days in Cody after Yellowstone.

For long hauls like this do you all sleep at truck stops or walmarts or do nightly at koa's? Since we have a generator I've considered the truck stops just concerned about safety with wife and kids.

Dwighop, For a trip that long consider adding a few more parks. After Grand Canyon, consider stopping at Brice, Zion, Capitol Reef or Arches. all are in southern UT. You can then go in the east entrance to Yosemite at Logan's pass. Plan on at least 7 days in Yellowstone. The road from Yellowstone to Cody WY is just a beautiful drive. If you have the time, this trip could last 8 weeks.

We are planning a 2 week trip stopping in South Dakota for about 4 nights and then another 4 nights in West Yellowstone and 2 more nights in the Wisconsin Dells. When we travel we usually just hit a rest stop or truck stop for the night and have never had any problems for the most part. The only problem I had was on a cross country trip in a motor home with a toad (a towed car). I stopped at just a truck pull off on a stretch of highway that was out in the middle of no where. I got woke up by a couple of guys trying to get the car loose from the motor home. They took off as soon as I turned the lights on and the cars tow bar was locked and wouldn't of been easy to get loose.
Personally I can't see paying for a camp site just to stop for the night specially with the price of fuel being over $4.00 a gallon. What I would spend in staying a night in a camp ground everytime we decided to stop would be a tank of fuel.
