Crummy mattress

We just got back from the camping vacation from Heck. We came back a day early too.

The Premier is beautiful. Everything works, the Boss loves it BUT. The mattress is not good for her.

She had back surgery a couple of years ago. Our old Mallard had a junky 4" foam pad as a mattress and she had no problem with it. This new Premier has a firm (real) mattress. After the first night, her back started bothering her, by the third day her back was hurting as it did just after the surgery. BUMMER.

I have been given the task of finding a new mattress that she can use. We won't be going out again until the end of August so I have some time.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
-mike

Ouch! Sorry for the hurt back!

We have a foam topper on our mattress, and it works great for us!

DW had back issues as well.

I believe it is a memory foam topper bought at Kohl's.

Hope that helps!

We experienced similar conditions our first time out in our new TT. We purchased a 4" memory foam topper online from Walmart. I think the cost was $129 plus shipping.

I would compare the comfort to our select number bed now! Best money we have spent on modifications.

We also bought a Memory Foam mattress cover at Kohls. Used it for the first time last week and I slept like a baby.

We added the toppers and it helps. If you are getting a new mattress be sure to measure as many rv ones are a few inches shorter and might not fit.

I bought a topper from Camping world. Around $125 and is 4" thick. Our mattress really sucks and this has made it sleep really good.
If you decide to go the route of Walmart or Kohls, you will most likely have to trim the topper to fit. It is not a big deal just wanted you to be aware. Heck, I had to trim the one that was made for our short queen, so go figure.

RV mattress's are notoriously bad. We have the memory foam topper. Bought at Costco. One other alternative is to have a mattress store build you one like you have at home to fit your RV. We did that when we went out full time. Or go to the mattress store, find one you like and build one like it. More expensive but small cost compared to the sore back.

Rather than have a new mattress built and the added cost associated with that, I would buy a foam topper as others have suggested here and try it out for a while. If it provides comfort and support for your wife's back, then problem solved. If, on the other hand, that doesn't seem to work, then look into buying a whole new mattress - either custom built or one "off the shelf".

Just some food for thought here....

Some RV's have bedrooms that are laid out such that with some minor mods, it would be possible to step up to a regular sized mattress rather than the "RV shorty." Our Cougar happens to be like that. If I remove one small wall cabinet and extend the bed platform by about 6", I could easily use a standard queen mattress. That would allow me to have a much wider choice of mattresses, and from regular outlets to boot.

We added a 1 1/2" Memory Foam topper to our matterss; and it made a world of difference - for the good. We highly recommend it.

Thanks to all. Once her back is better we plan on going to Kohl's and getting a foam topper. We'll spend a couple of nights in the driveway testing it out. If that doesn't work out then I think we'll check out the return policy for the Sleep number mattresses.

Call sleep numbers customer service, they will truly pay attention to what you are saying and will make suggestions to make more comfortable.

After a few back surgery's myself, we ended up buying a bed from bedinabox.com awesome bed quality made product, I went to places that sold bed toppers they just didn't have the support or comfort as the bed in a box has, before we purchased online we went to bed stores and tried many many different types when I found the material and construction of the bed we wanted we asked others rv ers what they were using and bed in a box was one suggested so I went online and it was made the way I was looking for at a reasonable price. if anyone wants the exact model send me a pm I will ask the boss to look in her files and get back to you.

And I will add my DW didn't like it the first two nights with that said after that she said she loved it

not cheap to buy.
I think it cost around $800 to $1,000 for the one we put in the rv
There is a pic of it click on my name then go to my photo album there is a pic of it in my sprinter.

The mattress in our Laredo was so poor that after 3 nights out, we pulled it out and threw it in the garage, on its way to the trash. I couldn't even see it being an acceptable base for a foam topper.
We bought the memory foam mattress from Costco for our stick house bed, and moved our house mattress to the Laredo.
The original mattress hasn't hit the trash yet, but it's so uncomfortable that I can't even see it in a craigslist "free for pickup" ad ...

I am contemplating going with the memory foam myself but have heard that it can be quite warm. But apparently there is a memory foam gel topper (or similar name) that will get rid of the heat problem.
Just something else to consider.

Still another vote for the memory foam topper. The mattress in our Hideout is by far the worst feature of the trailer. When will RV makers spend an extra few dollars for a decent mattress? We bought the topper a Wallmart for around a $100 and it makes the horrible mattress into a very comfortable sleep. I honestly can't believe the difference.

We ordered a memory foam topper from Kohls. With her 20% off coupon and the 50% off sale from the website the 4" foam is under $200 including shipping.
We'll give it a try. If it doesn't work in the trailer; the stick house bed needs a new topper anyway.
Thanks,
-mike

We replaced our King inner spring with a 14 inch queen memory foam mattress from Costco. I had to cut down the plywood by a few inches on both sides. We have a Sealy foam mattress in our home.

As for sleeping warmer they do a little but we always have a window open. We tried the topper but if the foundation you put it on is bad it really isn't much better.
