5-gooseneck prep package on Ford 2015,

I have been wondering why Ford will let you put a hitch prep package on short box and then state the fifth wheel hitch Ford wants to sell you will only work on a long box. Does Ford offer a 5th wheel hitch that will drop in the prep package without going through the Reese adapter? Seems like there should be a slider hitch for this set up? Anyone have any knowledge on this who may of bought the ford prep package for a short box. What hitch do you use?

The Ford prep kit is a Reese Elite hitch... and yes Reese sells a slider to fit the pucks. Its called the Reese Elite Slider. Ford just doesn't offer the hitch, but you can buy it at any Reese hitch dealer.

Or you could replace the pin box with the Reese Sidewinder/Revolution.

msp2jxr,

I think the main reason for the disclaimer is Ford's legal department not wanting to buy into the "crushed cab" problem. In the past 4 or 5 years the RV manufacturers have been modifying the front caps to allow greater turning angles for short bed trucks, but the process isn't yet 'fool-proof". So, Ford is "steering clear" of the "he said/she said" kind of argument by simply saying that they still recommend an 8' bed for a non-sliding hitch.

Although they are "smart enough" (or greedy enough) to offer the fifth wheel/gooseneck kit in both the short bed and the long bed models.

I've got an 8' bed with the fifth wheel kit and bought a Reese adapter plate to use with my old "rail type" hitch. I've been very satisfied with the results and currently we are looking for another Superduty with the 6.5' bed. If we should decide to buy, the fifth wheel/gooseneck option is a "must have" or I wouldn't consider the truck. I definitely want a "clear bed" when the hitch is removed and I'm too "cheap" to buy another $800 hitch to replace the hitch I currently have.

I have gold Super Duty F250 that you can see in the pictures with 53,000 and chipped chipped and runs like a rabbit... if you are interested let me know. I am looking for 29,500 on it.. Anything less and I am better trading it in for the difference in tax. Thanks for info on the Ford thought process. I haven't decided if I will keep my hitch and do the adaptor or go for the Rees elite and not use an adaptor.

I have a short bed and I didn't buy the prep package because the holes are already pre-drilled so I bought the plug for in the bed(the one that comes in the prep package) and then added a B&W Turnover hitch using a 4 inch offset ball and installed a Reese Goosebox on my trailer. I get about 85 degrees of turning with about an inch between the cab and front cap

This is the second Ford truck that I have bought with the Hitch prep pkg. and I have a The Ford/ Reese Elite hitch in it. The Hitch that comes from Ford is a 22,500lb rated hitch for the F350/F450 DRW I have that hitch in my short bed for over 3 years and have not needed a slider and never came close to hitting the cab while backing into a site. You just have to be careful and do it slow. While in Arizona last year I watched a guy pull up and back in so fast and sharp he did not listen to his DW to stop and crunched the cab and nose. I learned a long time ago to back up slowly whether a RV, Boat, Car and yes a Airplane to (Reversing Prop) .

My current driver is not level in all areas so when I spin my trailer around in my driver way it comes close to the cab and tips in a bit because the driveway is not level. I don't normally need the slider for most situations but like having for my drive way. it just takes some of the worry out of the equation. I still haven't decided which is the best way to go. Keep my slider or just get the drop on Elite hitch.

Reese makes a Elite Series 18K 5th Fifth Wheel Slider Hitch that fits in the
pucks it's about $2,000.00. I really like the flat floor with this system.
