FYI

One product I used years ago that seemed to a good job to prevent rust from coming back through is the Loctite Extend Rust Neutralizer. It neutralizes the rust and acts as a primer also.

Also, Phosphoric acid wash, found at automotive paint stores help neutralize the rust and etches the metal for paint adhesion.

Phosphoric acid is one of the ingredients in Navel Jelly.

If you want it to last use automotive basecoat/clearcoat and start with a good epoxy primer. I painted my Reese that way back in 2011 and it still looks new. The original powercoat did not hold up well and faded really quick.

I guess I should have read the entire thread before I posted, looks like your done. Looks great!!

Thx, this was a quick temp fix. I may dive back in and use some quality product next time around. It was getting pretty chipped up so I did this quick fix. With the cover now I think it will hold up better this time around.

Last year I repainted my hitch cause it looked so bad next to our new trailer. Used abrasive flapper wheel in electric drill for rust removal and semi gloss, oil base, Rust-oleum in my spray gun.
For me the key was to mask the decals, using an Exacto knife to outline, and it looks like a factory job.
