Want to buy but will our truck be able to tow

👋!! My husband and I with our 2 littles are looking into a bullet 243BHSWE . We are totally newbies to the trailer world. I love the layout of this one but I’m unsire about if our truck will be able to tow it. We have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma with tow package, sobit can tow 6,500lbs. Seems like the gross weight is right about there. Think we can do it? Any advice to an anxious buyer??

Off the top of my head....no. The Tacoma is a "little" truck. The trailer you are looking at comes in at about 6500 lbs. What are the specs on your truck? Tow capacity, gvw, gawr, gcvwr etc.? They are inside the driver door. A 6500lb trailer can, and will, stretch many 1/2 ton trucks...a Tacoma isn't that. Find your numbers and post those back and folks can help much better. A Tacoma, in my mind, from 2007, would do well pulling a pop up or a much smaller trailer.

It would be my opinion that a pickup that small would be good to pull a pop-up camper or the like. A small wind or any passing vehicles would blow your rig all over the road. Actually I'm just repeating what Sourdough just said. The truck is simply too small to haul much.

I would say no. When we bought our 20' 4,000 lb.trailer both the dealer and Ford told us that it would be fine to pull with our Ranger, 4.0 V6 with tow package rated at 6,000. We did make it home (50 miles) but it only took a few miles to decide we needed a bigger truck. Power and tow rating are one thing, length of trailer in comparison to truck wheelbase is another. Now we are pulling 4,000 with a 10,000 rating, and it's sooo much better.

Welcome, glad you're here and asking the important questions before jumping in w/both feet. The Passport is a great trailer and floor plan. Our daughter has the same model. It works really well for their family of 4.
Now the good news! Father's day was just a few days ago and what better late Father's Day gift than a new truck for Dad
Your Tacoma is really not made to safely tow a trailer like the Passport. The son-in-law tow's theirs with a Tahoe SUV which is really a full size 1/2 ton truck. We've camped and caravanned to campgrounds with them and it does the job well.
You will need a 1/2 ton full size pickup equipped with the towing package, 3:73 gearing and the big V8. Now all you have to do is decide on the color

Welcome and some advice newbie's get in trouble with nearly every time. When picking a trailer many use the listed empty weight of the unit. Do not use that number use the GVWR (gross loaded load), that's what it will weigh when used. Then they get as close to the max. towing weight of the truck with the trailer.
Easy to use wrong numbers and get overloaded quickly. Many times the trailer and truck tests you read about list the trailer at 75% of the max towing rating, not 100%. That is a good safe number to think about. And gives room to carry more camping gear etc.

A good salesman will make sure the truck and trailer are a good combo but, do not count on that. You need to do your research. Every new truck has what that truck will carry and tow printed on white and yellow stickers near the drivers door. Every model will have different numbers.

Most truck &/or rv salesmen are there to sell ONLY & most have NEVER owned a rv or towed anything & don't know/care if your trucks too small or rv too big. DO NOT take anyone's word about your situation, do your own homework, it's your families safety that you need to be concerned with.
Personally you don't have enough truck with the Tacoma, the Tundra maybe!

Here is a timely example, the Grand Cherokee is only rated for 3,500 lbs. towing, and they were going way too fast.
