New Ford V8

Saw this post on another forum. I will be the first to admit my knowledge of engines is meager. Is this new engine/chassis something to look out for in the future when it comes time to replace/upgrade the TV? Also, which model truck would it be used for (F250/F350 or both, F450 or greater)?

All of them. Just saw an article Ford is bringing back the F-600 as well.

New gasser, easier to work on, cheaper to buy and work on. Easier for emissions etc. will be a winner for the light class A and class C motor homes. Gobs of torque for a gas engine. And a great engine for the Rec Tow set.

You know back when the V10 came on the scene... it actually was shoe horned into a prototype Mustang! Obviously Ford did not put it into production....too bad.
Soooo, just wait for that monster to find it's way into an F150 and or Mustang....for experimental purposes-lolClick image for larger version

You wouldn't cringe if you owned a 7.5L gasser... probably just a weeeeee bit better on the 7.3L and the Ford guys on the Ford truck forum took offense at the use of the 7.3 engine size due its now possibly being confused with the iconic diesel of the size.

I saw a you tube vid where someone was talking to a ford engine engineer and he said that there goal is to have similar fuel economy as the 6.2 L gas engine. That is where the 10 speed tranny comes in to help. I am cautiously optimistic about the new engine since I am an f250 gas truck owner. Will wait and see.

Probably something for those who are afraid of owning a diesel. It should be over 400 hp and I'm guessing they could get 550-600 foot lbs. out of it, That would beat the Ram and the Chevy gas motors, and if they could keep the mileage decent they'll likely pull market share from them. A pretty smart move I'm thinking. Everyone has been trying to make lots of power with small displacement turbo engines. Even Ford. Then they pull this out of the hat!

I was commenting a couple weeks ago about wishing the truck manufacturers would focus on a smaller, lighter diesel with 250-300 HP and 400-500 pounds of torque for those of us who don't need 500HP/1000 pounds of torque... Maybe this engine will fill that gap between the high rev 6.2 and the older diesel 7.3 NA engine. If I remember, it had about 250 HP and 375-450 pounds of torque.

This engine might just be the answer to a "mid power towing truck" without spending 10 grand on a diesel or settling on a "barely adequate" 6.2L gas hog...

If they're marketing it in the Class A gas motorhome chassis (20-25K weight) it should pull a 12-15K fifth wheel in a properly equipped truck.

And, as a "cherry on top" that 10 speed transmission, if it's the one I think, is the GM/Ford joint venture, so it will essentially be the same "hardware in Chevy, GMC and Ford HD trucks. Only the software, shifting regimens would be different....

Im excited about Ford going back in time a bit and building a large displacement pushrod engine. Im curious if they are still going to do any variable valve timing with cam phasers?? Im sure they will.
Funny how its full circle and almost back to 454/460 days but with direct injection and much better stoich burn rates equalling better economy.

Im going to sit back and watch for a year or so. Pretty firm believer in the "dont buy first year of new tech" camp.

Id definitely be interested in a lightly used Lariat badged F250 in a few years if it proves to be reliable.

Last rumor I heard, was that this 7.3L motor was going to be a twin turbo like the EcoBoost. I'd sure like to see some specs on the power and torque. The 3.5L EcoBoost in my F-150 has 470 ft. pounds of torque. More than the V-10. Almost as much as the 7.3L diesel I had in my 2002 F-250 even. It's amazing what they can do with motors these days.

Doubt it will be turbo at all. Back to Pushrod and the main thought it to keep is simple and serviceable. Pictures of it do not show turbos.

With so many ending up in fleets and RVs simple and easy to work on/maintain is key. Not that my eco boost is hard core, but less moving parts they say.

Thanks for the link, some good info there. Neat that it will be port fuel injected; Ford must be trying to avoid the carbon problems that seem to be happening with nearly every direct injected engine.

Yeah. I think in 17 the eco-boost added port injection in addition to the direct due to carbon buildup.

Thanks for the link fishsizzle. Answered my VVT question. Was surprised to see its not a DI but thats fine with me, makes service even easier. Cant wait to see some actual HP/Torque #s.

Combined with the new 10 speed transmission, this would be a great choice for those on the line between the 6.2L gasser (a bit under powered for heavy towing) and the $9K diesel. The 10 speed and the torque of the 7.3L should keep it out of the 5000 RPM range while pulling a grade.

Didn't Cummins already do this with the 5.0L Diesel? That is probably a mid stream output diesel. I think it is only offered with the Nissan Titan right now though.
