We traveled from Truckee Ca to the wine country and highway 80 out of Sacramento was the worst we have been on.

On our recent trip from WC Indiana to GCNP, PHX, Dallas area< Nashville area then back home we found that I40 from Memphis to Nashville area was very rough, but we keep wondering why bridge approaches are not designed to have a LEVEL surface to and from the bridge deck. Any civil engineers out there with the answer? I thought our bridges in Indiana were bad, but there were several other states as bad or worse.

Worst roads in the universe are IH10 & IH20 through Louisiana. I had to buy stock in Preparation H after bike trips on both of those nasty stretches of bumps and jumps.

I have to agree with you on that. I've never figured out why the LDOT believes that you need to "launce and land" every 20-30' or why the approaches to every bridge need to be 2' higher than the bridge surface.....

Here in Canada they are called "expansion joints". The idea is to allow for the freeze thaw cycle. It is very bone jarring and murder on the equipment travelling on our roads.

Yes, they are expansion joints. And, I understand them in Canada....but LA?? When virtually surrounding state doesn't use them? We just figured they had an engineer(s) that used some sort of specs for frozen country instead of a bayou.

We made a trip to Florida in February and found the roads through Birmingham, Alabama to be horrendous. They are so bad I am looking for an alternate route when we travel back to Florida in a couple weeks. Any suggestions? St. Louis, Missouri to Destin area. Thanks. Happy and safe travels everyone.
