Manual slide retract on 2019 Cougar Half-Ton 26RBSWE?
We've recently purchased a 2019 Keystone Cougar Half-Ton 26RBSWE travel trailer, which includes a single slide-out section.
When doing the walk-through (pre-delivery inspection) with the dealer's representative, we asked how we are to retract the slide in the event the motor is not available. He showed us the drill driver adapter and said that it needs to be inserted into the fitting in the motor, which is located inside upper section of trailer wall, above the slide.
How does one do this? I can see it may be possible to reach this when the slide is extended, but as it retracts, it's going to move me further away from the motor. I don't see how this is possible without about a 5 foot extension.
Is it possible to retract this slide manually? Are there any "tricks" to doing this?

Sounds like you have a cable actuated slide. The override “tool” is probably 10-12 inches long with a 1/4” hex drive you put in the driver. If you have enough extensions I suppose you could, just use the flexible at the motor end.

Yes, your assumptions are correct (sorry I didn't think to include that info).
What do you mean by using the flexible at the motor end? The motor is positioned on the inner wall of the trailer, about center on the slide. When the slide is extended, I can reach over the slide from inside the trailer and touch the motor, but as the slide is retracting, it is pushing my further away from the motor.

The override tool has a square drive that has to be inserted into the gearbox if I remember right. Been a while since I worked on a cable slide.
What I mean is if your using extensions on the drill to reach from the side, just use the solid extensions on the drill end and the flexible shaft extension on the gearbox end.

I fretted about that on the Passport I used to have too. I just made sure I did the maintenance on the slide seals and never had a problem in 2 years.

I can stand off to the side, as I would be in the forward bedroom, but I would be 4-5 feet from the slide motor.

Well you probably have about 3’ of arm reach, and your still 5’ short?

Hmmm, good point. I would need a stool and about 2' of extension. I'll have to try it the next time I'm out there.
Thanks for all your help. I was really hoping there was an easier way to do this, like an outside access under the lip of the slide or something like that. I just don't know what they were thinking when they designed this.

They weren’t. I say it all the time, if the designers and engineers had to use these things they wouldn’t be designed this way.

You need to do this from the side of the slide. Not in front of it. That way you don't have to move while the slide is.
Also keep in mind, that this is for in an emergency not for every time use. So once you get it closed it goes to the shop gets fixed and then you don't need to use it anymore.

Yes, I understand this is only when the motor doesn't run for some reason. If I think I may have to do it more than zero times, I want to make sure I know how to do it and have the proper tools to do it. That was the purpose of this question.

If having the expertise and the tools needed is "the objective" then you might want to actually get out the flexible drive adapter, a stool and your battery operated drill and actually retract the slide. As an example, if I'm 6'6" with a 38" arm length and I need a 8" stool and no extra extensions, that doesn't mean that a 5'3" person could do the job with the same stool and tools..... Only by actually "doing it" will you "know for sure" that what you have in your hands will work for you.
I'd also suggest actually jacking your trailer axle and changing a tire to be sure you have the tools to do that task. Many people have 13/16 lug nuts, so they stash a small hydraulic jack, a 13/16" socket and a breaker bar in the trailer without trying the process. When they do have a blow-out or flat, only then do they realize that they need a 3/4" socket to get the spare tire off the bumper rack and without a 2" extension, they can't seat the socket on the lug nut and get enough torque to loosen the lugs.
Actually "doing the task in your driveway" is the only "sure, proven" way to know you have what you need, in the tool bag when you're a "bazillion miles from civilization" ..... YMMV

Thanks, John. This is what I'm trying to do. It just looks like the motor is much too far for me to reach without extensions. Perhaps the slide motor is positioned differently on
my trailer? I can't go out and check, as the trailer is in storage and I can't get to it this weekend. I'll give it a try next weekend.

Cable operated slides usually have the motor positioned in the center above the slide. I am currently working on an OLD trailer that one of the cables broke and the motor is in a rear compartment in the corner...OH JOY!!!

My passport has the same bal cable system. Dealer told me to remove the center trim piece. The you have much easier access to the motor. Only is 2 screws. The flexible driver should work fine.

I ended up buying a second flexible extension ($10). I can get it connected standing on the bench of our dining area then stand towards the middle of trailer in front of slide and bring it in. Don’t stand or put pressure on floor of slide while retracting and it will come in pretty slow.

No one has addressed this... most of the time, in my experience, what dies is the gear box, not. the electric motor. If the gear box dies, your totally out of luck as that flexable emergency drive is useless.
I've been thinking of this lately as my wardrobe slide completely blocks entrance to the bedroom. If that gear box dies with the slide closed, I'll have to break in through a window to get to it.

Also, those folks who said I can just reach in from the side must have a narrower slide. I just measured the distance from the right edge of my slide to the motor and it's over 6 feet.
