Has anyone checked the actual payload weight for a 2012 keystone cougar 299RKS the book shows it at 1405 lbs.

Generally the book will show pin or hitch weight of the dry/empty trailer. Once you load it that weight will be different for everyone.

It shows carrying capacity at 2,359 lbs, which would be 'payload', and your pin weight rating is 1405 lbs, which is the weight applied to your tow vehicle in the bed. Like was said, these weights can vary, depending on how you load your trailer, but these numbers indicate the pin should not weigh more than this, probably due to frame construction not being strong enough to handle more weight. Even if your axles were carrying what the trailer is rated at, or less, but your pin weight was over the rating, you would probably be considered over-weight on the frame. Just a thought

Pin weight isn't a "rating" just the weight as you stated, on the rear axle when the trailer is empty. You will exceed this weight as soon as you add propane, battery(s), and gear.

The rating you DON'T want to exceed is the axle rating of the tow vehicle.

Fifth wheel weights are tricky to figure out. As someone earlier said, a good portion of the trailer's weight is carried by your truck (the actual pin weight), while the majority is carried by the axles and tires. When loading up, you've got to distribute everything as evenly as possible - and don't forget to take into consideration any water in your fresh water tank and wherever that it is located. That's why it's a good idea to stop by a truck scale and find out what it actually is when everything's loaded for a typical trip/outing.

Actual cargo capacities aren't that difficult, but the maker's figure does not include any water, waste water, or propane (or even air!) so ANYTHING that goes in or on takes away from it.

I'm a good 1,000 pounds over my advertised pin weight of 2175#.
Add: Bedroom A/C, propane, 2 batteries, folding chairs, 2 folding tables, 2 ammo cans full of tools, 2 jacks, extension cords, leaf blower, patio mat, bottled water, Coleman stove, smoker, gas grill, fishing stuff, on and on.
But I think what really pushed it too far...the washer/dryer combo. Hey, they had the hookups for it. lol
Oh, forgot the DW 28 pairs of shoes.
That's how you overload a F350 with a trailer that is advertised as 3/4 ton towable.

You'd be okay with a Ram 3500. Payload is around 4000lbs in the SRW.

Yeah I know, I have one on order. They are claiming a payload of 4330, from memory. We'll see what the yellow tag says when it gets here.
Check my thread in "tow vehicles".

That's what I told her. It's an old story from the 1970's. We rented a pop-up for the Thanksgiving holiday to take hunting. She packed about 9 pair of shoes for the 4 day trip. The number grows as the years go by.
