New to travel trailer but ready to purchas
Hello all! I have no experience with anything other than tent camping. I am strongly considering the Bullet 298BHS and am looking for any advice that you all are willing to give me. I have a 2013 GMC sierra 1/2 ton crew cab. I choose this trailer for its weight but is it still to big for my truck? Are there any other brands I should consider?

The biggest obstacles we ran into with our 1/2 ton was payload & wheelbase. JRTJH posted a good example to go by in post #5 of this thread. http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/sho...oad#post114920
Look at your limits on the placard inside your trucks door & you can plug in your own numbers to see where you stand. Hope this helps! It can be really confusing.

Our half ton was not big enough to pull a Bullet Premier 30REPR. Also if you are looking at a Fiberglass Cap buyer beware. Ours is only 10 months old and bubbles are already in the fiberglass. RV Body man says it was built that way and will only get worse. Again buyer beware

Welcome to the forum
We are 1st time rv'rs. We purchased a new tt in February we got a passport ultralite 23rb. Our criteria was what would fit in the driveway and what I felt comfortable with pulling, last but not least we really liked the floor plan, just 2 of us, don't need a dinette, it has stool seating at the counter. I have a silverado 1/2 ton with a tow package. The winter has been such that we have not been able to go anywhere but what pulling I have done, it pulls just fine.

Steve,
I own a 2010 Silverado 1/2ton crew cab which will have nearly identical tow ratings to your 2013 GMC. I regularly tow a 2012 Cougar Xlite 29Rev that has a dry weight 1,100lbs higher than the 298HS. I have no issues pulling/stopping it and have weighed it several times at the CAT scales. Always well under spec except payload which is always going to be tight with a 1/2 ton. I'm under payload also, but I have to be more mindful when loading.

7500 pound trailer should be ok, watch you payload. My trailer max weight is slightly higher and my 150 tows it great. Good luck.

Thanks for the great info! I am fairly certain that I'm going to purchase the 298bhs. The dealer is offering a weight distribution hitch for $300 and a break controller for $100 both installed. Will these work fine or should I do some research? The trailer dry weight is 5700 with a tongue weight of 640. Is there a chance I will need away bars or air bags?

I would say yes to a sway bar.

Get the best load distribution hitch you can afford. I used to have the chain stile and friction sway bars on my old tt. when we purchased our new on, It was no decision, but a given I would upgrade to the Equal-i-zer hitch. I'm glad I did. makes all the difference in the world.
Good luck with your imminent purchase

the Bullet 298BHS looks like a great choice, I agree with the recommendation to buy a really good hitch, We started out with a chevy 1/2 ton but traded that up for a Ram (1500) with the Hemi and factory brake controller. If you do not have enough truck, your local dealer has one.

Congrats on the rig. And, yes, on doing some research. Most dealers sell you the cheapest hitch and brake controller which leave a lot to desire. Get a Prodigy brake controller, nothing less. Equal-i-zer is great and I would recommend it for a trailer that size. You can actually install both yourself very easily.

I have a 281BHS and love it. You want a prodigy brake controller for sure. I have the P2 and would recommend it. You can purchase one online for $125 and get a pigtail connector for around $10 that will plug right into your truck without having to splice wires.
