Anyone have a good idea what would be the minium type pickup to be able to pull 40 ft TH safely? I have 2011 F350 single wheel short bed

There's a lot of variables in that question. A srw F350 has about a 3900 pound payload, so find out your king pin weight to see if you can handle it. Also would be helpful to know cab config.-Is it a reg, super or crew? 4x2 or
4x4? Max fifth wheel towing is 15800, so is that within the trailer limit? When I first bought my Raptor (39'), I had a srw F250 sb, 7.3 with 3:73 gears. It towed it O.k., but I really noticed a difference from my previous fiver. Gave me a great excuse to get a new truck. Now have an F350 sb drw, 6.4 with 3:73 gears. World of difference with the dually. Depending on how you load it, you can probablt stay within mfgs. recommended specs. All depends how comfortable you want to feel going down the road.

bigger the better

Six wheels and a lot of power! keep that in mind when buying your new truck. You will enjoy traveling a lot more then white knuckling it on the steering wheel the entire time you a hauling. Also check manufacture ratings for weights on both truck and trailer.

I agree with the six wheel comment. However, I have not been able to upgrade to a dually, I pull my 361 LEV with a 2500HD Duramax CC with no problems.

According to Ford, your payload is 3960, fifth wheel wheight of 15800, and combined weight of 23500. Don't know what hauler you're looking at, but if it's a 16,000 Gvw triple axle and you load it full, you'll be over the specs. Now, you don't necessarily have to load it full. My 39' Raptor weighed 13,036 from the factory with full propane tanks and no generator. My truck, like yours has a 15800 tow capacity. Closest I ever got was 15300 with all of the stuff we take. Not sure what your rear axle is rated at, or the tires load carrying capacity, but 3500 pound pin weight is gona be pretty much. Taht payload only accounts for a 150 pound driver (yeah, we're all close to THAT!!) so anything else you put in the truck will take away from your carrying capacity. Don't know what kind of hitch you are planning to use, but would definetly consider a slider with that short bed. Keystone seems to have really short pin boxes, and even with the radius corners, I think it's risky with out a slider. If you go the Pullrite route, they are quite heavy, so take another 300 pounds off of your carrying capacity.Depends on how you load it, you could fall in specs, but most everything will be near the limits. What's the hauler you're looking at?

Looked at Keystones specs. That's 18000 gross trailer. And 42' long. They list the pin weight at 2755. Said it ships dry at 13547, with a cargo capacity of 4453. Realistically, you could only carry 2250 in cargo. Taht would be all of your camping needs AND your toys, total. Seems like it would not leave you room to take a lot of things along. As far as the pin weight, that depends on how you load it. Remember-anything you add behind the trailer axles will take some weight off of the pin. There are 2 guys over on Rv.net that each just bought one of those. You could check in with them and ask for some real world weights if that helps. Look under the toyhauler forum.

I have the Raptor 3612. I tried to haul it with a 2002 F350 crew long bed with mild 7.3 mods, single rear wheel and manual trans. Getting the trailer going was easy. Problems started when road was slick or the winds kicked up. If the trailer brakes would go out I dont think I would be able to stop the trailer. It was a lot of work to tow in this configuration. I ended up buying a F450 and now the heavy chores of hauling are gone. Have to remind myself now that I am towing. I dont like towing to be a chore and feel there are big reasons to have the right tool for the job.

I have 2011 4014LEV. I have 08 F350 Dually. Personally, I wouldn't even think about trying to pull it with a 3.73 gear. I have yet to weigh it (scales not close to any destinations as of yet) but at 13,500 dry (less batteries and propane) you lose your hauling capacity pretty quick. Figure 300-400 lbs minimum on pots, pans, glasses, coffee mugs, utensils, ect that are "permanently" added weight. Then figure at least 300 more for food and groceries. I always have my fuel station and gen tanks full so add an additional 360 lbs. Add 120 lbs. for 2 full 30# propane cylinders, and 75 lbs for the 2 batteries. That alone is 1255 lbs, with no fresh water, grey water, or black water weight, as well as nothing in the garage. Deduct that from the limit of 2250 which leaves you a total of 995, which aint' much left in weight of toys. This is not taking into consideration IF you could even load it to where you pin weight was right ect.
