Tom Sawyers West Memhis, AR.

I called today for reservations. They are closing the campground for awhile because of rising Mississippi River water. They thought we would be OK for the 1st week of April.

When you get there, there are two sections to the campground. One "back in the trees" where the restrooms, laundry, etc are located and one "out on the flats" next to the river. The laundry/bath house are in a 2 story building. There are water marks on the second floor where the "last year's rising water" had flooded the campground. Those water marks were "mid window" on the second floor, probably 16-18 feet above the ground. All of the cypress trees were also marked where the water level had risen. Needless to say, everything "out on the flats" was under 25+ feet of water.

When they close the campground, you can bet it's because nobody is crossing the levy to the "wet side".....

Dang that's a lot of water.
I guess the Ohio River flooding is getting downstream.

According to the USGS website, on Jan 12 the river was 2' below normal and today it's about 26' above normal. That's a 28' increase in water level in 5 weeks. The flow rate (per that website) was about 250,000 gallons per second on Jan 12 and is right at 1 million gallons per second today. So yup, dang that's a lot of water.....

In Memphis we live with this every year, sometimes as many as three or more times in the same year. If we could get the populations in the areas of the Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri rivers to control things at their end we wouldn't have this problem. And those of you around the tributaries to these rivers need to do your share also. Maybe we could blame those who are praying for snow.....or rain....If we had built a few locks and dams south of the city of St Louis maybe this wouldn't be such a problem....There's the answer; blame the Corps of Engineers.
On edit: This was all tongue in cheek...

The COE gets blamed for everything. News reports here say they knew the Houston flood control reservoirs would overflow days before it happened, but just didn't tell the public for whatever reason.
That USGS website is usually pretty close. I watch it for Texas rivers for fishing info. We have a big slug of water coming down the Trinity River now.
And yeah, I live with it too. My backyard is the river levee.

I can guarantee you that no one in Missouri is praying for snow! Not even the youngin's! They were all scheduled to be out of school before Memorial Day, now they all owe the State of Missouri an additional week of their lives. Kind of like going to prison....without the hootch and fried bologna sandwiches.

I'm here to serve and protect. My Weight Police badge carries many responsibilities, dinner being one of those.
