New member looking for advise re: leak in Cougar 29bhs

Hello folks,

We live in Paradise, Newfoundland (Canada) and camp almost every weekend from May to September. We have a 2011 Cougar 29 BHS and this is our third trailer. Tow vehicle is a 2006 F150 XLT Crew Cab.

Looking for some advise...we have a seasonal camp site and towed our trailer there in early May. When we went camping a couple of weeks back, upon entering the trailer, we noticed the front bedroom floor was soaked. Did an inspection and noticed caulking near the front of the trailer, near where roof intersects with exterior wall, had separated. Used towels and ran a space heater for three days to dry out the bedroom. After three days, floor was mostly dry but there were still a few wet spots.

Camper is now at dealer awaiting repair under warranty. Dissapointed with quality of manufacture. No issues over winter storage, and caulking problem seemed to occur very quickly and coincided with lots of rain we had after bringing camper to site.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issue with TT, what was done to repair, etc. Appreciate any feedback. I have also included a pic of the defective area.

It is ALWAYS frustrating to find a problem with any equipment. Finding water in your bedroom is very frustrating. But the problem may well have not "just occurred quickly" but could well have been there for some time. If your RV was parked in storage for the winter with the nose slightly higher than the rear and the leaking side slightly higher than the other side, water runoff may well have prevented any water from getting to that area. Water may have collected under the sealant edge, frozen and as it expanded pulled the sealant away from a very small leak that you'd never noticed. Over the winter the freezing and thawing kept separating the sealant until there was a significant leak, but you never noticed it in storage because of the way the water drained off the roof. Then, once you set it up on site, more level than in storage, water started flowing toward that area and leaked into your RV.

This may not be what happened, but I'd not completely rule it out. At least Keystone is repairing it under warranty, so you should be good to go after the repair.

This is a good example of why we all should check our roof carefully at the beginning of each season and at prior to storage as well. Roof maintenance is the only way to stay ahead of this kind of problem.

Hello and welcome to the forum. There has been a short thread here (see Keystone Recalls) about some newer units having a similar but more complex and more serious problem than you are having. It has to do with flexing, separations and cracking. I also recall a thread on the forum that appeared some time ago about the exact same kind of separation but I believe it appeared on the back of the unit - not the front. I did a search but couldn't come up with anything.
Luckily, your unit is still under warranty and hopefully the dealer's repair shop will deal with the problem so that it doesn't reoccur.
It would be interesting to hear what the dealer's explanation is to what caused the separation.
Let us know when you get your unit back from the repair shop.
