Stuck brake drum

2019 Cougar half-ton. 22 ft.

Just bought this and was checking the wheel bearings. Pulled the outer bearing but the drum wont come off.

Got the drum to move enough to get the outer bearing off - but more. Can wobble the drum around some (half- inch or so). It's springy but wont come off.

Suspect the brake shoe is the problem, but don't know which way to go.

Any suggestions.

My first post.

There will be 2 slots on the back of the backing plate. Rear slot should allow you access to the adjustment star. Using a brake spoon or flat head screwdriver, engage the star and move the handle UP to loosen the shoes.

Don't forget to buy a rubber plug for the access slot after removing the drum. The cause is the ridge left at the outer edge of the drum, the shoes wear down the drum just inside of the outer edge and self adjusters, if supplied, will make it difficult to remove the drum without backing off the starwheel as mentioned by Chuckster. I would not expect that much drum wear on a 2019, make sure the trailer brake control are not set too high.

Thanks much Chuckster and Gkri. Got it done.

One more question. Best way to adjust the brake using the star-wheel.

Back side of the drums have two slots (none covered). Rear is the star-wheel. what is the other for.

Once you re-install the drum, turn the starwheel while spinning the drum. just adjust the starwheel for slight rubbing of the shoes on the drum. I highly recommend going to an auto parts store and getting the little rubber plugs for those slotted holes.

the second hole is for the opposite side of the trailer or vehicle. They are made identical to save money. One side will use the front slot, one side will use the back slot.
