Running the generator while hooked up to 110/220V power?

I purchased late last fall a 2012 Raptor 300MP. We will be taking it on our first excursion to Daytona Bike Week in a few weeks.

Right now it is stored inside and I have just 110V hooked up and the red battery selector switch is on to keep the batteries charged.

Can you run the generator also when hooked up to 110/220V (30/50 amp) power?

Thanks for the great site!

Not sure about the way your generator is set up IRT the electrical. I have two circuit breakers on the output of my generator (located under my generator cover) that, if open, allow me to run the generator while the 5er is on shore power.

If you have this same set up on your RV, do NOT run the generator with shore power connected AND close these breakers. You will be looking at buying a new converter for your RV.

Just my $.02 on the way my generator is set up. You may have a different configuration and I am sure that someone with a Raptor 300MP will weigh in. I fail safe and will not run my generator with shore power connected just in case.

Good luck!

With our fuzion 310 I have power to it 24/7
And once a month I like to run the generator for 10/15 min I have never unpluged it yet. The dealer said it was safe to do and so did a phone call to keystone.

Out of curiousity, why would you need to run your generator if you were hooked up to a 30A/50A campground power post? Other than for the odd time to start and run it for a while as a check or test, what would be the reason for having it running while on shore power - especially if you are on 50A service.

It could also be considered, by some, as poor campground etiquette to have a generator running while, at the same time, having full electrical service provided.

I think he is just "exercising" hi generator. IMO a smart thing to do.

I run my generator about once a month just to exercise and have never unplugged power and haven't had any problem.

Good idea to test the engine. I disconnect the shore power and make the
generator run the trailer during the test period.
This also proves that the generator can handle the electrical load.

Fred M: I had assumed that once the generator is running, the system cannot simultaneously draw from shore power. If that is correct (and it may not be) then there would be no need to disconnect shore power while testing generator. Would be interested to know if I am mistaken.

The trailer should be equipped with an automatic transfer switch. The switch will close one loop and open the other. I think shore power trumps generator power, but do not quote me on that one.

I have not seen all systems. The few I have seen, shore power trumps
generator power. To have them both supplying power to the rig would require
a synchronizing system of some kind. Too expensive for RVs.
I don't have an "on board" system at this time. I am a fan of making the
generator do some actual "work" as its test. - Fred.

Our motorhome ran on shore power even if the generator was operating. The only way to get the switch to function to provide generator power to the coach from the generator was to disconnect the shore power line. The owner's manual recommended running the generator to power the motor home for about 30 minutes monthly. The motor will function and stay "fresh" by just running the generator, but the generator section will only "freewheel" and not really produce any power unless there is a load on the system.

I'd just about bet that the transfer switch in fifth wheels is wired the same way.

I think you would be best to test you generator under load.
1. to make sure it works.
2- it the difference between letting your car idle in the drive way and taking it down the highway at 60 mph.

But I believe the only way to load the generator is to disconnect shore power so the transfer switch moves.

I run my generator once a month for about an hour with everything on inside to put a draw on the generator ,I have always unplugged the camper from the shore hook up,just something I have always done, I guess it comes from hooking the house up to the portable generator when the power goes out ,but now we just go to the Raptor and turn on the generator
