2013 Onan 5500

Just purchased a 381LEV with the new generator. Onan has "upgraded" with new EPA higher emissions standards. We haven't had a chance to take the Raptor on the road yet, but just running generator with A/C's on while working in the RV the motor began to sputter after getting hot. Took it to an Onan dealer-after calling Keystone and he said that Keystone and Onan are aware of the problem-- the damper plate between the exhaust and the air intake needs to be taped up around all the cracks so that the exhaust air doesn't recycle back into the ambient air. Not any tape will do, needs to be heat resistant tape. Just wondering if anyone else has had these problems..

I'm looking forward to seeing these pics. I have the same problem with the generator shutting down when the unit gets hot. I can only duplicate this when the outside temp is above 80 or so. When it's below that, everything seems to run fine.

A month ago we were on two weeks of vacation and it was very hot outside. In two weeks I only put eleven hours on the generator as I couldn't keep it running. Fortunately, I brought along a Honda generator as a backup. This was our maiden voyage in this unit and I wanted to be prepared in case of a problem with the on-board unit and I was lucky I did. The only time this thing doesn't work is when you need it.

I am taking the TH in for service tomorrow for other things as well as this generator issue. I am going to have a difficult time convincing them that there is a problem with the generator when I can't even duplicate it.

Generator over heat

Had the very same problem this spring.

I cut the floor of the trailer under the exhaust where the generator sits. (The original install the hole wasn't big enough) Some of the exhaust air was getting directed back to the intake side causing the generator to over heat.

I then made a piece of tin to divide the intake air from the exhaust air and sealed any air gaps with foil tape.

Have run the generator for about 50 hours this summer and have had no more problems.

I'll post pictures later today.

Keystone and Onan are aware of the problem with the new generators. They are now installing a divider wall between the intake and exhaust air. But even with that, they are still having problems- they have not sealed up all the cracks. Now their recommendation is to tape up all the cracks so the air does not mix.

This is what I did....and haven't had a problem as of yet.

Thanks to all for posting these pics. I've got my TH in for some other service right now but when I get it back I'll be taking steps to correct this problem.

Service Bulletin

Just posted notice from Keystone on service advisory 12-183 which stated contact dealer and some sort of baffle will be installed, not getting a warm fuzzy feeling with this camper, something simple is always going awry, quality control must be lacking at the manufacturer, small things but getting tired of trips back and forth to dealer! Luckily I am only five miles away, but a pain to constant set up and reset without the benefit of camping and why when the job or the work to is outside i find dirt and doors unlocked in camper
