Keystone 2670bh

Hi all. New member, I just wanted to say thank you all for giving us the information needed before we spent the money on a new tt. I've owned four dodge diesels from 97 12 valve to 2004 and my wife finally talked me into a new camper but I am driving a 1500 now so the weight and ccc played a big role in the decision making process. My truck has 3.73 gears that I added a while ago and I currently run a custom Diablo tune with borla cat back exhaust system. I have an equalizer hitch and air bags on the truck and I set the hitch up myself, the dealer had it set up terrible. The tt has a dry weight of a little over 5000lbs, I weighed the truck today with all the family and gear and we have plenty for tongue weight and a little gear in the truck. Camper has a gvwr of under 7000lbs . I've done quite a few test runs and other than being 30 foot long it behaves really well. I don't think I'll load it much over 6500lbs which should be ok. I'm pulling it to the scales tomorrow to get all my numbers. Truck gcvr is 7000 and gcvwr is 15,000lbs with a ccc of 1625. Rear axle is 3950. So what do you think? I'm pretty comfortable driving it but I told my wife, one squirrelly trip and back to a new Cummins. Any thing you see that is concerning? Thanks Dan.

It's really too early to tell. Tomorrow, after you get the weight slips at the CAT scale, then we'll all know if you're OK or if you're headed to the closest RAM dealership..... Keep us posted !!!

Good luck at the scales. Your payload will kill you. On the other hand, lots of good sales on 16 2500 Rams right now.....

Thanks JRTJH. That's the plan. I'm not real happy about the length but my truck is paid off so if things are to close I'll bite the bullet and get another tv. My wife understands the importance of comfortably towing and hoping its over soon lol. I'll post the numbers and see what we have. Thanks again for all you guys do to keep us safe. Dan

Welcome to the forum from Southern MD. Enjoy. If anything will get you it will be payload or rear axle weight. When I used to tow my 2810 that is just a bit bigger than your 2670 and we were fully loaded for a 10 day trip with a 3rd tank of fresh water for emergencies I only had 200 lbs of rear axle weight to spare. Let us know how it goes at the scale and post pictures when you can.

Hi all. I finally got everything weighed yesterday and I'm pretty happy with the setup. Truck has a gvwr of 7000lbs and 1625 ccc , front axle gwr is 3950, rear is 3950 with a gcvwr of 15,000lbs. I am at 3520 steering axle, 3440 rear axle and 6100lbs on the trailer loaded for camping. We had the truck and trailer loaded up with the whole family and gear that we will be taking. It really pulls nice with the equalizer hitch. I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can.

It sounds like the trip to the CAT scales not only confirms your weights, but also gives you the "security of knowing" exactly where you stand. It's always comforting to know (not guess) that you're within the limits of your tow vehicle capacity.

One thing I'd caution you to remember is that your tow vehicle weight is 6960, which is only 40 pounds below your truck's GVW. Every trip brings "weight creep" as you add a couple of tools, a pot or pan, a new set of chocks, a tool or a toy or another set of blankets or ????? And, if you omit the "take something not needed out" actions, all those "little things" keep adding up. So, stay on top of what you add, always think about loading heavy items close to the floor and lighter items in higher areas, "fore/aft" loading to maintain tongue weight and remember it's not the size of the storage capacity rather it's the weight you put in that storage bin.

Enjoy your trailer, your camping trips and the memories they will bring to your family for years to come.

Thanks JRTJH. I'll definitely keep an eye on the truck weight, the good thing is I have a cat scale just a few miles from home so we'll probably go through at least once a month just to stay safe. I've towed a lot of trailers but never a big travel trailer so I have some learning to do about how loading affects everything. I'm sure I'll be picking some of your brains over the summer. Dan

A couple more pictures.

Here's a few more of the trailer. So far we really like the layout of the bunkhouse. Dan

We are not far behind you with our new 2670BH! We purchased last month and will be hitting the road full-time in June. Still trying to decide on how much tow vehicle I need for this rig, so it's nice to see your numbers to give me a better idea. Definitely leaning toward 3/4 ton something (which your 1/2 ton numbers seem to confirm for me), but still uncertain if I am ready to go Diesel.

Happy trails!

To be honest If I didn't already have this truck paid off I would definitely recommend a 3/4 ton. I'll see how the summer goes with this one and if I don't like it I'll probably be back in a bigger truck. Have fun and be safe. Dan

We have a Bullet 269RLS which is pretty much the same as yours when it comes to length and width. I pull it with a '10 Silverado 1500 5.3 Diablo tune and just swapped out the 3.08s for 3.73s. I haven't pulled it yet since the switch but should make a decent difference! I use an equalizer hitch and air bags.
Last season was the first with it and it towed alright. I still haven't found the best pressure for the bags yet but I do have to redo the hitch from when the dealer initially set it up.
We put about 1000 miles on it last season and their were times you didn't know it was back there and others when you could feel it but I also had it in 25 mph winds! I'd like to step up to a 1 ton eventually but I'm happy with the setup for now!

Well the first of many trips went pretty good. We camped about 60 miles from home and the truck pulls the camper better than I expected it to. We had electricity but no water and I was concerned about running out but we didn't have any trouble even with the kids using the bathroom every five minutes. I'll post how things go as the weather gets better and we get out more. Dan

Sounds like you got an early start to the camping season. We're a month out from opening up the season. Glad your first trip was trouble free.

Glad you had a good trip. I don't understand kids fascination with RV toilets. My grandkids do the same thing.
