Remove the top bunk
Has anyone attempted to remove their top bunk in the garage? I have the Fuzion 301 and being that I am 6'2 I have to be real careful not to hit my head on the brackets of the lower bunk. I never use the the top bunk for anything so Id like to remove it and its support brackets so that I can get another 6-8 inches of clearance in there. It looks as if I have to disassemble the whole Happy Jack frame to get it out. Comments?

Thinking out loud: isn't the top bunk set on top the brackets and pinned? It's been a while since I've worked on a happy jac bed.

That is correct although the brackets that the top bunk ride on are inside the track of the Happy Jack. They are responsible for tripping the micro switch at the correct hight. I want to take those brackets out so that the lower part will go up about 8 more inches.

The lower bed is the dinette which we use. It is also the main support that connects to the Happy Jack system. So removing that is an impossibility without taking out the entire system.

The bracket that rides on the chain has two screws if I remember right. So I don't see why you couldn't take them off.
I would note the distance from the bottom bracket so you could put them back in if needed.

I'm 6'7" and don't have any problems on our raptor. Maybe you have a different lower bed.

Bed brackets
http://store.lci1.com/happijac/produ...n_happijac&p=1 Web link shows the type my Fusion 325 has. I have played with it a lot. Since your going to remove the top bed you will have a lot more options for engaging your trip switch. The inner bracket has multiply mounting holes that can be changed with a Phillips head through the slot, up or down and still engage stop switch. If that's not enough you could use just one screw to mount the spacers. You can also drill, tap and remount you trip switch. I think some of those ideas might help.

Those look like mine also. Im wondering if I can get all the top bunk hardware out of the Happy Jack lift without disassembling it.

You can pull the hair pins that hold the upper bed to the lift and remove the upper bed as a unit, not affecting the lower bed at all.

You are correct, the problem then is getting the inside bracket out. It is a U shaped bracket that slides inside the channel of the Happy Jack frame. It can not go out the top because of the gearing mechanism on each leg. Im not sure if I can slide it out the bottom by removing one support at a time on the lower bunk but that is my next idea.

Your Rapter must be a 5th wheel? They have another foot of clearance over the TT style toy haulers. I didn't want to go with the 5th wheel when I bought my trailer due to the location that I store it while not in use, which is most of the time. But my salesman assured me it was a simple task to remove that bed. He must have miss understood me as well.

At the top of the post I described what I am trying to do and why. Just removing the bunk would not solve the issue I have with the set up. I need the lower bed to go in another 6-8 inches to be out of the way.

Remove the top bunk
IIRC I was able to take the brackets out without taking the frame apart. The bracket should have teeth that engage the chain and a plate that is screwed into it to hold it in the chain.

The brackets that you are talking about, are they for the lower bunk?

Yeah. My brain is actually engaged this morning. The bottom bed brackets are engaged with the chain, top brackets ride free.
I have a new TH that I am working on, that has the happy jac bed. I will have a look see about the upper brackets and let you know.

Ok, thanks. I think the best bet is to go out through the bottom. I'm not sure what is at the bottom of each leg as far as a sprocket for the chain but that seems to me to be the easiest way.

I looked and I agree, looks like your best bet is to take the bottom apart, pull the gear to slide the upper bunk brackets out.
The lower bunk has the brackets that engage the gear, I would use painters tape and Mark exactly where the lower brackets go somewhere they are all the same height.

Upper Bunk Trolley
I had the same problem with our Carbon 33. The upper bunk trolley has to come out to gain any more height or clearance. Two choices take it all apart to get all four out which is a real pain. I choose to take a die grinder and cut the upper bunk trolley in half. Take a pair of pliers and remove them. Might not be the best way but it's done!! Now the RZR fits.

Not yet, It is still a storage shed right now. I store both of my motorcycle trailers in there over the winter to get them out of my garage. I will report back once I have made any progress.
